Saint Martin de Porres, whose feast day is 3 November: a life of humility, charity and love for one’s neighbour

Life of the Saints
Post

Every year on 3 November, the Catholic Church honours Saint Martin de Porres, a humble Dominican friar from Peru whose life remains an exceptional testimony to faith, compassion and Christian charity.

Born into a society deeply marked by inequality and discrimination, Martin de Porrès devoted his life to alleviating the suffering of the poorest, caring for the sick and serving God in the simplicity of everyday life.

Without seeking honours or recognition, he turned every act of kindness into a true prayer. His life reminds us that holiness is measured neither by wealth, nor by social status, nor by great achievements, but by the depth of the love we have for God and our neighbour.

Sometimes known as ‘Martin of Charity’, he is today particularly invoked by those suffering from discrimination, poverty, illness or exclusion.

On this 3 November, let us discover the story of this extraordinary man, the trials he endured, the miracles attributed to him and the spiritual teachings he still imparts to us today.

Who was Saint Martin de Porres?

Saint Martin de Porres was born on 9 December 1579 in Lima, Peru, which was then under Spanish rule.

He was the son of Juan de Porras, a Spanish nobleman, and Ana Velázquez, a free Black woman from a family with a history of slavery.

His birth out of wedlock and his mixed-race heritage meant that, from a very early age, he faced the contempt of a society in which differences in social status and skin colour largely determined one’s place in the world.

His father did not immediately acknowledge him, and Martin grew up in modest circumstances with his mother and sister.

From childhood, he experienced poverty, humiliation and injustice. Yet, far from harbouring resentment towards those who rejected him, he displayed a remarkable gentleness.

He learnt to share the little he had with those even less well-off than himself.

This early generosity already revealed one of the defining characteristics of his spirituality: to see in every person, whatever their background or circumstances, a child loved by God.

Whilst society constantly reminded him of his differences, Martin found in the Christian faith an essential truth: all people possess the same dignity before their Creator.

This conviction would guide his every action.

A youth devoted to serving the poor and the sick

From a very young age, Martin showed a particular interest in those who were suffering.

He learnt the basics of the barber-surgeon’s trade, a profession which, at that time, included, amongst other things, certain medical treatments, the dressing of wounds and the use of remedies.

This training enabled him to acquire valuable knowledge in the art of alleviating the suffering of the sick.

But for Martin, caring for others was not merely about treating physical ailments.

He attached great importance to listening, patience and offering comfort.

He understood that illness is often accompanied by loneliness, fear and anxiety.

He therefore took the time to listen to those he cared for, to comfort them and to pray with them when they wished.

His compassion knows no social distinction.

He cares for the poor as well as the rich, free people as well as those in slavery, without regard to their background.

In a deeply divided society, this attitude stands as a remarkable testimony to Christian brotherhood.

Martin thus puts into practice the teaching of Jesus:

‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. ’ (Matthew 25:40)

For him, serving the weakest is tantamount to serving Christ himself.

Martin de Porrès’s entry into the Dominican Order

As a teenager, Martin felt a deep calling to devote his life to God.

He drew closer to the Dominican monastery of the Holy Rosary in Lima, where he first entered as a servant and associate member of the community.

Due to the social prejudices of his time, his religious journey was marked by obstacles.

However, Martin sought neither privileges nor prestigious responsibilities.

He simply wished to live close to God and serve his brothers.

He carried out even the most humble tasks with great faithfulness: cleaning the premises, maintaining the communal areas, caring for the sick and attending to the community’s daily needs.

He was eventually fully admitted into the Dominican Order as a lay brother, officially dedicating his life to poverty, chastity and obedience.

His life then became a remarkable example of fidelity to his vocation.

For Martin, no task is insignificant when carried out with love.

Sweeping a corridor, preparing a meal, tending to a wound or bringing a glass of water to a sick person are all opportunities to serve the Lord.

This way of life reminds us that holiness can flourish in the most ordinary acts of our daily lives.

Saint Martin de Porres, an exceptional model of Christian charity

Charity occupies a central place in the life of Saint Martin de Porres.

Every day, he welcomes the poor, the sick, the abandoned and those who find no support elsewhere.

He shared the convent’s resources and sought help from wealthier people in order to come to the aid of destitute families.

He also helped to care for orphans and organise medical care for the sick.

His generosity went far beyond the obligations of his religious community.

When he met someone who was suffering, he did not begin by asking them where they came from, what their circumstances were, or what they could offer him in return.

Above all, he sees a human being in need of help.

His love for his neighbour is deeply rooted in the Gospel.

Jesus teaches us that the greatest commandment, after love for God, is love for one’s neighbour.

Saint Martin made this teaching the guiding principle of his entire life.

His charity is not limited to words or good intentions.

It becomes concrete, part of daily life and demanding.

He gave of his time, his strength and sometimes even his own rest to alleviate the suffering of others.

His life teaches us that true charity consists in loving without calculation, serving without expecting reward, and recognising the presence of Christ in the least among us.

Deep humility despite humiliations

Humility is another great virtue of Saint Martin de Porres.

Throughout his life, he had to face the consequences of racial and social prejudice.

Yet he refused to let these injustices destroy his trust in God.

He never regarded humble tasks as beneath him.

On the contrary, he carried them out with joy, convinced that spiritual greatness does not depend on human recognition.

Tradition has it that one day, upon learning that his convent was facing serious financial difficulties, Martin is said to have offered to his superior to sell himself into slavery in order to help repay the debts.

This account, passed down by his biographers, illustrates the extreme humility attributed to him, whilst also highlighting the harsh social realities of his time.

His humility does not mean that he condoned the injustices of which he was a victim.

Rather, it testifies to his determination not to let hatred take hold of his heart.

In a world where people often seek recognition, admiration or validation, Saint Martin invites us to rediscover the beauty of unassuming service.

He reminds us that God looks first and foremost at the sincerity of our intentions and the quality of our love.

A life of prayer and a deep devotion to the Eucharist

If Saint Martin de Porres was able to devote so much time to serving others, it was because his entire existence was nourished by a deep inner life.

Despite his many duties, he set aside long periods for prayer.

He particularly loved to spend time in contemplation before the Blessed Sacrament and to meditate on the Passion of Christ.

The Eucharist occupied a central place in his spirituality.

From it he drew the strength needed to face difficulties, endure humiliations and continue to serve with patience.

His prayer was not separate from his actions.

On the contrary, it gave them their full meaning.

By contemplating Jesus, who made himself a servant of humanity, Martin learnt to become a servant of his brothers himself.

This union of contemplation and action is one of the most precious lessons of his life.

It reminds us that Christian prayer must not distance us from the sufferings of the world, but rather make us more attentive to the needs of others.

To pray truly is also to learn to love more.

The miracles attributed to Saint Martin de Porres

Over the years, Martin de Porres’s reputation for holiness spread beyond the walls of his convent.

Numerous accounts report extraordinary healings, unexplained events and graces obtained through his intercession.

In particular, certain traditions speak of healings of the sick whom the medical means of the time were unable to help.

Other accounts attribute to him the gift of bilocation, that is to say, the mysterious ability to be present in two different places at once.

According to these accounts, Martin was reportedly seen with people in distress whilst he was normally in his convent.

These accounts form part of the hagiographic tradition surrounding his life and bear witness to the profound veneration he was held in.

But beyond these extraordinary phenomena, Saint Martin’s greatest legacy remains his charity.

He devoted his entire life to making God’s love visible to the most vulnerable people.

And it is perhaps here that the deepest miracle of his life lies: having transformed the humiliations he endured into an immense capacity to love.

Saint Martin de Porres and his love for animals

Saint Martin de Porres is also known for his great kindness towards animals.

Tradition has it that he cared for dogs, cats, birds and even small animals that many considered pests.

Several accounts recount how he managed to get animals that were usually enemies to live together peacefully.

He is sometimes depicted surrounded by a dog, a cat and a mouse, symbols of this harmony.

These depictions reflect his conviction that all creatures belong to God and deserve to be treated with respect.

His kindness towards animals forms part of a profoundly Christian vision of Creation.

Human beings are called to care for the world entrusted to them, not to dominate it cruelly.

This aspect of his spirituality still resonates particularly strongly today.

It invites us to cultivate an attitude of respect, responsibility and gentleness towards all living beings.

The death of Saint Martin de Porres and his canonisation

After a life entirely devoted to prayer and the service of others, Martin de Porres died in Lima on 3 November 1639, aged 59.

His passing caused deep sorrow amongst the city’s inhabitants.

The poor, the sick, members of religious orders and many people who had benefited from his kindness came to pay their respects.

His reputation for holiness spread rapidly.

Over the centuries, devotion to Martin de Porres spread far beyond Peru.

He was beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI, and subsequently canonised on 6 May 1962 by Pope John XXIII.

This canonisation officially recognised his holiness and held up his life as an example to all the faithful.

Today, Saint Martin de Porres is particularly honoured in Latin America, but devotion to him extends to many countries.

He remains an important figure symbolising human brotherhood, social justice and love for the poorest of the poor.

Why pray to Saint Martin de Porres?

The faithful invoke Saint Martin de Porres for many intentions.

He is particularly sought after by those facing material hardship, suffering from illness or feeling rejected and misunderstood.

His personal history makes him an intercessor who is particularly close to those who are victims of injustice and discrimination.

We may also ask him to intercede for families facing poverty, for those who are alone, for carers and for all those who devote their lives to serving others.

His life encourages us never to lose faith in divine mercy, even when circumstances seem difficult.

Praying to Saint Martin de Porres does not mean passively waiting for a miraculous intervention.

It also means asking God, through his intercession, for the grace to develop the same virtues as he did: patience, humility, compassion and charity.

It means learning to translate our faith into concrete actions.

The teachings of Saint Martin de Porres for our daily lives

More than four centuries after his death, the example set by Saint Martin de Porres remains remarkably relevant today.

Our world remains marked by profound inequalities, by loneliness, poverty and various forms of discrimination.

Faced with these realities, Saint Martin reminds us that every Christian can become a peacemaker and a promoter of brotherhood.

It is not necessary to perform extraordinary deeds to follow his example.

Taking the time to listen to someone who is isolated, visiting the sick, helping a family in difficulty or offering a gesture of comfort are all ways of living out Christian charity.

His example also teaches us the importance of forgiveness.

It is sometimes difficult not to respond to injustice with anger or resentment.

Yet Martin shows us that it is possible to reject hatred without compromising human dignity.

Finally, he invites us to rediscover the value of humility.

In a society where success is often measured by wealth, fame or power, his life reminds us that true greatness lies in the capacity to love.

Holiness often begins with a simple gesture, performed with a sincere heart.

Prayer to Saint Martin de Porres for humility, charity and protection

O glorious Saint Martin de Porres,

You who devoted your life to the service of God and the poorest of the poor, hear our prayer today.

You who experienced humiliation, injustice and trials, teach us to keep our trust in the Lord.

Help us never to respond to hatred with hatred, but to choose the path of forgiveness, peace and love.

Saint Martin, you who cared for the sick with such gentleness, intercede for all those who suffer in body or in heart.

Bring comfort to those who are alone, support to families in distress, and hope to those facing difficulties.

Teach us to recognise the face of Christ in every person we meet.

Grant us a generous heart, capable of sharing without counting the cost, of serving without seeking honour, and of loving without expecting reward.

Help us to remain humble in our successes, patient in our trials and faithful in our prayer.

Saint Martin de Porres, model of Christian charity, intercede for us before the Lord.

May our lives, following your example, become a living witness to God’s goodness and mercy.

Amen.

Saint Martin de Porres, an example of holiness accessible to all

The life of Saint Martin de Porres reminds us that holiness is not reserved for a select few extraordinary people.

It is a path open to all who wish to follow Christ with sincerity.

Martin did not seek to accomplish great things in the eyes of the world.

He simply chose to love God and to serve his brothers and sisters, day after day, with remarkable faithfulness.

His life shows us that the humblest of deeds can become great works when carried out with charity.

On this 3 November, let us ask the Lord to give us a heart like his: a heart attentive to suffering, open to forgiveness and always ready to come to the aid of the weakest.

May the example of Saint Martin de Porres encourage us to foster peace, brotherhood and compassion around us.

For the true greatness of a life is not measured by what we possess, but by the love we have been able to give.
