Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque: her life, the apparitions of the Sacred Heart, promises and prayer

Life of the Saints
Post

Among the great mystical figures of the Catholic Church, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque occupies a special place. A nun of the Order of the Visitation, she was chosen, according to Catholic tradition, to convey to the world a spiritual message of immense depth: the infinite love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for humanity.

In the 17th century, at a time when religious life was characterised by great spiritual rigour, this humble French nun received several private revelations which helped to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus throughout the Church.

Her life, characterised by prayer, sacrifice, trials and a profound union with Christ, reminds us that God never ceases to call people back to his merciful love.

Every year, on 16 October, the Catholic Church celebrates Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, whose witness continues to inspire the faithful throughout the world.

Let us discover her story, the apparitions of the Sacred Heart, the great promises associated with this devotion and the spiritual teachings she has left us.

1. Who was Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque?

A childhood marked by faith and trials

Marguerite-Marie Alacoque was born on 22 July 1647 in Verosvres, Burgundy, into a Christian family.

From childhood, she showed a deep religious sensitivity and a particular inclination towards prayer.

At a very young age, she felt the desire to consecrate her life to God.

However, her childhood was marked by several trials. Her father died when she was only eight years old, leaving her family in a difficult situation.

Marguerite-Marie also endured long periods of illness.

Far from distancing her from the faith, these sufferings gradually nourished her inner life.

She developed a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom she regarded as a protective and comforting mother.

After enduring family difficulties and wavering about her future, she finally decided to answer the call to religious life.

Her entry into the Monastery of the Visitation

In 1671, at the age of 23, Marguerite-Marie entered the Monastery of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Paray-le-Monial.

The Order of the Visitation had been founded in 1610 by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jeanne de Chantal.

Its spirituality is based in particular on humility, gentleness, charity and trusting surrender to God’s will.

Marguerite-Marie found there an environment conducive to prayer and contemplation.

She took her religious vows in 1672.

It was in this monastery, in the heart of Burgundy, that she would have the mystical experiences which would profoundly mark the history of Catholic spirituality.

2. The apparitions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Paray-le-Monial

The first major apparition in December 1673

On 27 December 1673, the feast day of Saint John the Evangelist, Marguerite-Marie was praying before the Blessed Sacrament.

According to her account, Jesus appeared to her and revealed to her the immensity of his Heart’s love for mankind.

Christ revealed to her his desire to pour out the treasures of his love upon the world.

This first great apparition marked the beginning of an extraordinary spiritual mission.

Marguerite-Marie realised that she must make known to mankind the love of the Heart of Jesus, a love that is often misunderstood, forgotten or rejected.

She also realised that this devotion must lead the faithful to a more personal relationship with Christ.

The Heart of Jesus, a symbol of his love for humanity

In the visions recounted by Margaret Mary, the Heart of Jesus appears surrounded by flames, crowned with thorns, surmounted by a cross and bearing the mark of his wound.

Each element has a spiritual significance.

The flames represent Christ’s ardent love for mankind.

The crown of thorns evokes the sins, indifference and sufferings that Jesus accepted for the salvation of humanity.

The cross recalls his redemptive sacrifice.

The wound in his Heart manifests the love of Christ, who gives himself entirely.

This representation would become one of the best-known and most venerated images in Catholic spirituality.

3. The great revelation of 1675 and the institution of the Feast of the Sacred Heart

‘ ‘Behold this Heart which has so loved mankind’

In June 1675, during the octave of Corpus Christi, Margaret Mary reported a new apparition of Christ.

Jesus showed her his Sacred Heart and spoke to her these now-famous words:

‘Behold the Heart that has so loved mankind.’

This revelation occupies a central place in devotion to the Sacred Heart.

According to the saint’s account, Jesus expressed his sorrow at the ingratitude and indifference of many people towards his love.

He asked that a special feast day be dedicated to honouring his Heart.

This feast was to be celebrated on the Friday following the traditional octave of Corpus Christi.

A feast that has become universal

Devotion to the Sacred Heart already existed in various forms before Margaret Mary, notably thanks to Saint John Eudes.

However, the revelations at Paray-le-Monial played a decisive role in its development.

The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus gradually spread throughout religious communities, parishes and dioceses.

In 1856, Pope Pius IX extended its celebration to the whole of the Latin Church.

Today, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus remains one of the great feasts of Catholic spirituality.

It invites us to contemplate Christ’s love, his mercy and his desire to save all people.

4. The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Catholic tradition associates twelve promises with devotion to the Sacred Heart, drawn from the writings of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque.

These promises express the spiritual graces associated with true devotion to the Heart of Jesus.

They are traditionally set out as follows:

  1. I shall grant to souls devoted to my Heart all the graces necessary for their state in life.

  2. I shall bring peace to their families.

  3. I shall console them in all their sorrows.

  4. I shall be their sure refuge during life and especially at the hour of death.

  5. I shall pour out abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

  6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.

  7. Lukewarm souls will become fervent.

  8. Fervent souls will rapidly rise to great perfection.

  9. I shall bless those homes where the image of my Sacred Heart is displayed and honoured.

  10. I shall grant priests the gift of touching even the most hardened hearts.

  11. Those who spread this devotion will have their names inscribed in my Heart.

  12. I grant the grace of final penance to those who receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of nine consecutive months, in the required state of mind.

These formulations constitute a traditional summary of the promises and not a literal transcription of any single apparition.

How are these promises to be understood?

It is important to remember that the promises of the Sacred Heart must not be interpreted as automatic material guarantees.

Devotion to the Heart of Jesus does not consist in performing religious acts for the sole purpose of obtaining a reward.

It requires sincere conversion, a life of prayer and a deep desire to live according to the Gospel.

These promises are, above all, invitations to trust, fidelity and love for God.

5. The devotion to the first nine Fridays of the month

A spiritual practice handed down by Saint Margaret Mary

Among the practices associated with the revelations at Paray-le-Monial, receiving Holy Communion on the first nine Fridays of the month holds a special place.

This devotion consists of receiving Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month for nine consecutive months, in a fitting spiritual state.

It is accompanied by a spirit of reparation, prayer and love for the Sacred Heart.

Why Friday?

Friday commemorates the Passion and death of Jesus on the cross.

It is the day on which Christians particularly commemorate Christ’s sacrifice for the salvation of the world.

Dedicating the first Fridays to the Sacred Heart therefore allows us to meditate on the love of Christ manifested in his Passion.

This practice also encourages the faithful to attend Mass regularly and to receive the Eucharist with fervour.

It remains a living tradition today in many parishes and religious communities.

6. The Holy Hour: accompanying Jesus in his agony

Another spiritual practice associated with Saint Margaret Mary is that of the Holy Hour.

According to her writings, Jesus asked her to set aside a specific time for prayer during the night from Thursday to Friday.

This prayer recalls Christ’s agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, when Jesus asked his disciples to keep watch with him.

The Holy Hour consists of spiritually accompanying the Lord in his suffering and meditating on his love for humanity.

It can take various forms: Eucharistic adoration, reading the Gospel, silent meditation or prayers of reparation.

An invitation to faithfulness

The Holy Hour reminds us that Jesus experienced anguish, loneliness and abandonment.

By praying alongside him, Christians learn to entrust to him their own sufferings and those of the world.

This practice also invites us not to forget those who live in loneliness, illness or despair.

For to love the Heart of Jesus also means recognising his presence in the most vulnerable.

7. Saint Claude La Colombière, Marguerite-Marie’s spiritual guide

A providential confessor

Marguerite-Marie’s revelations were not immediately understood or accepted by those around her.

Some nuns questioned the nature of her mystical experiences.

Marguerite-Marie then went through periods of doubt, incomprehension and inner suffering.

In 1675, Father Claude La Colombière, a Jesuit priest, became her confessor.

After carefully considering her account, he recognised the sincerity of her spiritual journey and encouraged her to continue her mission.

He played a vital role in spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart.

A shared mission

Saint Claude La Colombière understood that the message entrusted to Marguerite-Marie extended beyond the confines of the monastery at Paray-le-Monial.

He helped to make it known within the Society of Jesus and beyond.

The spiritual collaboration between these two saints is a fine example of complementarity in the Church’s mission.

Marguerite-Marie receives and passes on the message of the love of the Sacred Heart.

Claude La Colombière supported her, discerned its meaning and helped to spread it.

Both remain closely associated today with the spirituality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

8. The sufferings and humility of Saint Margaret Mary

Saint Margaret Mary’s life was not marked solely by mystical consolations.

She also experienced misunderstandings, humiliations and numerous difficulties.

Some of her spiritual experiences were met with suspicion.

She had to learn to live in obedience, patience and humility.

Yet she never sought to become famous.

Her sole desire was to respond to the love of Christ and to make his Sacred Heart known.

Holiness lived out in daily life

Margaret Mary carried out the ordinary tasks of monastic life.

She took part in communal prayer, work and the various responsibilities entrusted to the nuns.

Her life reminds us that holiness is not manifested solely in extraordinary experiences.

It is also built up through simple acts, through faithfulness to one’s commitments and through the love offered each day.

It is precisely this humility that gives her witness its full depth.

9. The death of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and her canonisation

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque died on 17 October 1690, at the Visitation Monastery in Paray-le-Monial, at the age of 43.

She left behind a considerable spiritual legacy.

Her writings, her letters and the testimonies of her contemporaries have gradually enabled us to gain a better understanding of her inner life.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart continued to grow after her death.

Marguerite-Marie was beatified on 18 September 1864 by Pope Pius IX.

She was canonised on 13 May 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.

Her liturgical memorial is celebrated on 16 October in the Roman calendar.

Today, her name remains closely linked to Paray-le-Monial, which has become a major place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

10. Paray-le-Monial: a sanctuary dedicated to the love of Christ

Situated in Saône-et-Loire, in Burgundy, the town of Paray-le-Monial welcomes numerous pilgrims every year from France and around the world.

Visitors can, in particular, explore the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Chapel of the Apparitions at the Monastery of the Visitation.

These places invite visitors to reflect and meditate on the love of Christ.

Paray-le-Monial is also known for its spiritual gatherings, periods of Eucharistic adoration and prayer meetings.

For many of the faithful, a pilgrimage to Paray-le-Monial is a special opportunity to rediscover divine mercy and to renew their consecration to the Sacred Heart.

11. Why pray to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque today?

More than three centuries after her death, Saint Margaret Mary’s message remains deeply relevant.

In a society where many people suffer from loneliness, anxiety or a lack of hope, the spirituality of the Sacred Heart reminds us of an essential truth: every person is loved by God.

This love depends neither on social success, nor on wealth, nor on human qualities.

It is freely offered to all.

We may ask for Saint Margaret Mary’s intercession to deepen our faith, find inner peace, overcome a trial, learn to forgive or grow in the love of Jesus.

She is also a particularly inspiring spiritual figure for consecrated persons, religious communities and all those who practise Eucharistic adoration.

Her example encourages us to place Christ at the centre of our lives.

12. Prayer to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

O glorious Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque,

You whom the Lord Jesus chose to reveal to the world the infinite treasures of his Sacred Heart, we come today to entrust to you our prayers, our hopes and our sufferings.

You who contemplated the burning love of the Heart of Jesus, teach us to recognise his presence in our daily lives.

Help us to understand that his love remains faithful, even when we turn away from him.

Saint Margaret Mary, you who lived in humility, obedience and prayer, teach us to accept God’s will with trust.

When our hearts are troubled by worries, lead us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the source of peace and consolation.

When we are wounded by life’s trials, remind us that Christ knows our sufferings and never abandons us.

When we are tempted by discouragement, obtain for us the grace to persevere in the faith.

O faithful servant of the Lord, intercede for our families.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus pour out His love, peace and blessing upon our homes.

Protect the children, guide young people in their choices and support parents in their mission.

Comfort the sick, those who are isolated and all those going through times of distress.

Help us to discover the beauty of the Eucharist and to draw near to the Lord with a sincere heart.

Teach us to make amends for our faults through true conversion and to respond to Christ’s love with acts of charity.

Saint Margaret Mary, you who loved the Sacred Heart so dearly, lead us ever closer to Jesus.

May our thoughts, words and deeds become a living witness to his love.

And when the hour comes for us to meet God, may we find refuge in the merciful Heart of our Saviour.

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, pray for us.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You.

Amen.

13. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque: a message of love for our times

The story of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque reminds us that Christianity is, above all, an encounter with the love of God.

Through the revelations of the Sacred Heart, this humble nun from Paray-le-Monial helped to rediscover an essential dimension of the Gospel: Jesus loves each one of us with a personal, faithful and merciful love.

Her witness invites us not to reduce faith to mere habits or religious obligations.

It encourages us to build a genuine relationship of love with Christ.

On this feast day, 16 October, let us take the time to entrust our lives, our families and our intentions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Let us ask Saint Margaret Mary to teach us to love more deeply, to forgive more readily and to remain faithful to the Lord.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be for each of us an inexhaustible source of peace, mercy and hope.
