A promised and consecrated child
The life of St John the Baptist begins in the mystery of promise. His parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth, were advanced in years and had no children of their own. But the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and announced the birth of a son, filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb. John was thus consecrated to God even before his birth, chosen to be the forerunner of the Messiah.
His birth is a sign of God's faithfulness: what seems impossible to man becomes reality through divine power. John grew up in the desert, away from the world, in a life of prayer, asceticism and listening.
A voice crying out in the desert
John the Baptist is above all a voice: one that prepares, that awakens, that calls for conversion. He appears in the Judean desert with a radical message: "Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand." He does not seek popularity, he does not speak to please. He spoke the truth. He announces that the world must change, that hearts must open.
He baptises in the Jordan to prepare hearts for the coming of the One who is greater than he. And when Jesus appears, John recognises in Him the Lamb of God. He kept nothing to himself: he pointed to Christ and stepped aside. "He must increase, and I must decrease."
A witness to the end
John the Baptist is a man of uprightness and truth. He does not remain silent in the face of injustice, even if it costs him. He dares to denounce the sin of Herod, who is living with his brother's wife. For this, he was thrown into prison and then executed.
To the very end, John remained faithful to his mission. He prepared the way, he showed Christ, he gave his life. He is the last prophet and the first witness of the Gospel.
A model for our faith
John the Baptist teaches us to make room for God. He teaches us humility, courage and faithfulness. In a noisy world, he invites us to the silence of the desert. In a world that flatters the ego, he calls us to step aside so that Christ may appear.
He shows us that true greatness is not to shine, but to prepare the way of the Lord in the hearts of others.
Prayer to Saint John the Baptist
Saint John the Baptist,
you who were chosen to prepare the way of the Lord,
teach us to recognise his coming in our lives.
Give us your courage to proclaim the truth,
your humility to efface ourselves before the One who is coming,
your faith to walk even in the desert.
You who baptized Jesus in the waters of the Jordan,
dip our hearts in the living water of the Spirit,
and make them available to God's call.
Intercede for us,
that we in turn may become faithful witnesses,
voices that proclaim the light in the darkness.
Amen.
