Among the most beloved saints in the Christian tradition, Saint Anthony of Padua holds a special place in the hearts of the faithful. Known as the saint of lost causes, the protector of the poor and the special intercessor for finding lost objects, he is invoked every day by millions of people across the world. His exemplary life, his deep love of God and his concern for the most disadvantaged continue to inspire believers several centuries after his death.

But how can we honour Saint Anthony of Padua in a meaningful way? How can we offer our prayers to him and deepen our devotion? In this article, we invite you to discover the various ways in which you can pay tribute to this great saint and nourish your spiritual life through his example.

Who was Saint Anthony of Padua?

Born in 1195 in Lisbon as Fernando Martins de Bulhões, Saint Anthony came from a noble and deeply Christian family. At a very young age, he felt God’s call and entered religious life.

After joining the Canons Regular of St Augustine, he later decided to join the Franciscan Order, inspired by the witness of the first Franciscan martyrs in Morocco. He then took the name Anthony.

His reputation as an exceptional preacher spread rapidly throughout Europe. Endowed with remarkable intelligence and a profound knowledge of the Scriptures, he drew crowds with his sermons, which were imbued with wisdom and compassion.

He died in 1231 in Padua at the age of just 36. Less than a year after his death, he was canonised by Pope Gregory IX on account of the many miracles attributed to his intercession.

Why pray to Saint Anthony of Padua?

Devotion to Saint Anthony is based on the belief that he intercedes with God on behalf of those who seek his help with faith.

The faithful turn to him in particular to:

Find a lost object.

Ask for help in a difficult situation.

Find a solution to a seemingly hopeless problem.

To bring peace to families.

To receive support during financial hardship.

To find a job or career guidance.

To strengthen their Christian faith.

To ask for a special favour.

However, it is important to remember that prayer to Saint Anthony is not a form of magic or superstition. In the Christian tradition, saints are regarded as intercessors who present our intentions to God.

How can we honour Saint Anthony in our daily lives?

Follow his example of charity

One of the finest ways to honour Saint Anthony is to imitate his generosity towards those in need.

Throughout his life, he was committed to helping the poor, the sick and the marginalised. He denounced injustices and encouraged the wealthy to share their wealth.

Thus, visiting someone who is isolated, making a donation to a charity or volunteering your time for a charitable cause is a tangible tribute to his spiritual legacy.

Reading and meditating on the Word of God

Saint Anthony was nicknamed ‘the Ark of the Testament’ because of his exceptional knowledge of the Bible.

Setting aside a few minutes each day to read the Gospels or meditate on the sacred texts allows us to follow in his footsteps and nurture our relationship with God.

Attending Mass

Regular participation in the Eucharist remains one of the most profound forms of Christian devotion.

Saint Anthony placed Christ at the centre of his life. Attending Mass, receiving the sacraments and living out one’s faith within the Christian community are therefore special ways of honouring him.

Wearing a medal or image of Saint Anthony

Many believers choose to wear a medal depicting Saint Anthony or to display an image of him in their home.

These objects possess no magical power, but they serve as a reminder of the saint’s spiritual presence and encourage daily prayer.

How do you pray to Saint Anthony of Padua?

Simple and spontaneous prayer

The most authentic prayer is often the one that comes from the heart.

You can simply address Saint Anthony in your own words:

‘Saint Anthony, faithful servant of God, help me in this difficulty. Intercede for me with the Lord so that I may receive the grace I need according to His will. Amen.”

This sincere approach can be practised at any time of the day.

The traditional prayer to Saint Anthony

Here is one of the best-known prayers:

O glorious Saint Anthony,

you who have received from God the special power to find what was lost,

help me to find peace of mind and grant me your assistance in my current difficulty.

Intercede with the Lord so that I may receive His grace and fulfil His will.

Amen.

The Novena to Saint Anthony

The novena is a spiritual practice consisting of praying for nine consecutive days for a particular intention.

This tradition is very popular amongst devotees of Saint Anthony. Each day, the faithful recite a prayer dedicated to the saint whilst meditating on an aspect of his life:

His call to faith.

His humility.

His love for the poor.

His obedience to God.

His missionary zeal.

His trust in Divine Providence.

His wisdom.

His purity of heart.

His union with Christ.

The novena can be observed at any time of the year, but it is particularly common in the run-up to his feast day on 13 June.

St Anthony’s bread: a tradition of sharing

An ancient tradition links St Anthony with bread given to the poor.

‘St Anthony’s bread’ symbolises charity and solidarity. Many of the faithful make a donation to a charitable organisation after receiving a grace or simply to honour the saint.

This practice serves as a reminder that true devotion is not limited to prayers but is also manifested through concrete acts of love towards one’s neighbour.

Celebrating the Feast of Saint Anthony on 13 June

Every year, 13 June is dedicated to the memory of Saint Anthony of Padua.

On this occasion, many parishes organise:

Solemn Masses.

Processions.

Blessings of bread.

Times of adoration.

Charitable works.

Taking part in these celebrations allows one to deepen one’s faith and experience a moment of fellowship with fellow believers.

The virtues of Saint Anthony to emulate

Honouring Saint Anthony is not merely a matter of making requests of him. It also means seeking to develop the qualities that characterised his life:

Despite his fame, Saint Anthony remained deeply humble. He regarded all his talents as gifts received from God.

His concern for the poorest remains a model for Christians today.
