A more discreet day
At the heart of Holy Week, Holy Wednesday is often called "Betrayal Wednesday". It marks a dark moment: Judas decides to hand Jesus over to the high priests. The arrest is prepared in secret. Holy Wednesday is a day of silent tension.Human freedom in the face of evil This day confronts us with a difficult reality: evil can arise in the human heart. Judas is no stranger. He is one of the Twelve. He walked with Jesus, listened to his words, saw his miracles.
Holy Wednesday reminds us that outward closeness to Christ is not enough. What matters is inner faithfulness.
The temptation to compromise
Betrayal does not always begin with a grand, spectacular gesture. It can arise from a compromise, a disordered attachment, or a poorly managed disappointment.
Holy Wednesday invites us to look at our own compromises. Where am I putting something else in God's place? What is gradually distancing me from him?
This is not a day for judging, but for examining one's heart.
A call to vigilance and trust
Faced with Judas' betrayal, it would be easy to sink into pessimism. Yet Holy Week does not end there. The Passion that is being prepared will lead to the Resurrection.
Holy Wednesday teaches us that darkness does not have the last word.
A day to choose
This day places us before an inner choice. Fidelity or abandonment. Trust or despair.
It invites us to renew our attachment to Christ before entering the Easter Triduum.
Holy Wednesday is a day of lucidity, but also of hope.
Prayer for Holy Wednesday
Lord Jesus,
on this Holy Wednesday,
keep my heart faithful.
Protect me from compromises
and choices that distance me from you.
Give me the strength to remain in your light.
Amen.
