A climate of tension
As Holy Week progresses, the atmosphere changes. After the anointing at Bethany meditated on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday plunges us into a more serious climate.
In the Gospel, Jesus announces that one of his disciples will betray him. The apostles are distraught. Each one wonders, "Could it be me?"
The betrayal foretold
Holy Tuesday is marked by the announcement of Judas' betrayal, but also by Peter's denial.
Judas will betray Jesus.
Peter, though full of good will, will claim that he does not know him.
These two figures resemble us. We sometimes have great intentions, but our actions do not always follow.
This day invites us to humility.
A call to inner vigilance
Holy Tuesday presents us with an essential question: am I faithful to Christ in difficult times?
It is easy to follow Jesus when everything is going well. But what about when it becomes demanding, when faith requires courage?
This day is not meant to accuse us, but to awaken us. It calls us to vigilance of the heart.
Between weakness and hope
The difference between Judas and Peter is not just fault. Both failed. The difference lies in hope. Peter weeps and returns. Judas despairs. Holy Tuesday reminds us that our weaknesses are not the end. As long as there is repentance, there is a way forward.
One step closer to the Passion
The tension mounts. The path to the cross becomes clearer. Holy Week advances.
Holy Tuesday prepares us inwardly. It helps us to recognise our dark areas, not to discourage us, but to open us to mercy.
It is a day of clarity and hope.
Prayer for Holy Tuesday
Lord Jesus,
on this Holy Tuesday,
come and strengthen my faithfulness.
Preserve me from discouragement
and teach me to return to you
even after my falls.
May your mercy be stronger than my weaknesses.
Amen.
