October, Rosary Month

For centuries, the month of October has been dedicated to praying the Rosary, a Marian devotion so dear to the heart of the Church. Every autumn, the faithful the world over turn their gaze to the Virgin Mary, meditating with her on the mysteries of Christ's life. The month of October, with its soft light and atmosphere of recollection, seems to be a natural invitation to this peaceful, contemplative prayer, which is both simple and infinitely profound.

This tradition dates back to the XVIᵉ century, after the famous Battle of Lepanto in 1571. At that time, Pope St Pius V asked all Christians to recite the Rosary to implore the Virgin Mary's protection in the face of the threat to Europe. Victory was attributed to her intercession, and to give thanks, the Pope instituted the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, celebrated every year on 7 October. This gave rise to the custom of honouring the whole month of October as the Month of the Rosary.

The Rosary: a simple and universal prayer

The Rosary is not a mechanical repetition of prayers, but a living meditation on the mystery of Christ through the eyes of Mary. Through the rhythm of the Hail Mary and the Our Father, the prayer gradually leads the soul towards inner peace and union with God.

Each decade of the Rosary is a step into contemplation: it brings to life a moment in the lives of Jesus and Mary - the joys, the sorrows, the lights and the glory. These mysteries form the heart of the Rosary:

The Joyful Mysteries, which remind us of the Incarnation and the beginnings of Christ's life: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation and Recovery of Jesus in the Temple.

The Sorrowful Mysteries, which immerse our prayer in the Passion: the Agony, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross and the Crucifixion.

The Glorious Mysteries, which celebrate the victory of life over death: the Resurrection, the Ascension, Pentecost, the Assumption of Mary and her Coronation into Heaven.

Finally, the Luminous Mysteries, added by Saint John Paul II in 2002, which help us contemplate the great moments of Jesus' public ministry: his Baptism, the wedding feast at Cana, the Annunciation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration and the Institution of the Eucharist.

Each prayer of the Rosary is a flower placed in Mary's hands. By meditating on these mysteries, we enter into the very heart of the Christian faith: the Rosary is a living summary of the Gospel, a prayer that takes us step by step with Christ.

Mary, Mother and model of prayer

When we pray the Rosary, we do not do so alone: Mary prays with us. She never puts herself in Christ's place, but leads us to Him. The Rosary is therefore a profoundly Christocentric prayer: each Hail Mary echoes the Annunciation and the presence of the Word made flesh.

The Virgin Mary, in her many apparitions - at Lourdes, Fatima, Pontmain, Medjugorje - has often recommended praying the Rosary as a means of conversion, peace and protection. She reminds us that the Rosary is a powerful spiritual weapon against evil, but also a path of gentleness and trust.

At Fatima, in 1917, the Blessed Virgin presented herself as Our Lady of the Rosary and asked the three little shepherds to pray the Rosary every day for peace in the world. Her words remain an appeal that is still relevant today: in a troubled world, praying the Rosary is a source of inner peace, a refuge in the midst of turmoil.

The Rosary, a prayer for our times

Today, the Rosary still retains all its strength. It never grows old, because it responds to the deepest need of the human heart: that of peace and the presence of God.

In an often distracted world, reciting the Rosary teaches patience, silence and contemplation. Each grain of the rosary becomes a heartbeat turned towards Heaven.

Many of the faithful testify to the peace they have rediscovered thanks to this prayer. Others find light and discernment in moments of doubt. The Rosary requires nothing extraordinary: it can be recited alone, with the family, in a church or even while walking. All you need is a rosary, a little time and, above all, an open heart.

October: a month to get closer to Mary

Throughout October, parishes often organise community rosaries, Marian processions or novenas to Our Lady of the Rosary. This is a privileged time to turn to Mary, to place our intentions, our families, our sick and our world in her hands.

This month is also an invitation to renew our faith in the power of simple and faithful prayer. Through the Rosary, Mary teaches us to pray not just with our lips, but with our hearts, to let God act in our lives.

Every day in October can become a step towards Heaven: a bead of the rosary, a prayer, a silence offered. This is how true peace is born, the peace that the Virgin promises to those who invoke her with trust.

The Rosary, a school of peace and trust

Praying the Rosary means uniting ourselves with the Virgin Mary to contemplate Jesus, to entrust our lives, our joys and our sorrows to Him. It is a school of faith and love.

October reminds us that prayer, when persevering and trusting, can change the world.

Under the mantle of Our Lady of the Rosary, the soul finds calm, light and the strength to love more. Through the Rosary, Mary takes us by the hand to lead us to her Son, the source of all peace and eternal happiness.

"Recite the Rosary every day to obtain peace in the world and an end to war."

- Our Lady of Fatima, 1917
