The story of Saint Charbel Makhlouf

A childhood in Lebanon, between poverty and faith

Youssef Antoun Makhlouf was born on 8 May 1828 in the remote village of Bekaa-Kafra, in northern Lebanon. His father died when he was still a child, and his mother brought up her five children alone. From an early age, Youssef showed great piety. Fascinated by the example of two of his uncles, Maronite monks, he decided at the age of 23 to enter the Notre-Dame de Mayfouq monastery. There he received the religious habit and took the name Charbel, in homage to a 2nd century martyr. This change of name marked the beginning of a life devoted entirely to God.

Charbel was born in the monastery of Notre-Dame de Mayfouq, in Paris.

A life hidden in God

Charbel continued his training at the monastery of Saint-Maroun in Annaya, where he was ordained a priest in 1859. He lived there for sixteen years, sharing community life, praying at length, fasting, working in the fields and celebrating Mass with deep fervour. But his heart yearned for more solitude. In 1875, he obtained permission to retire to the nearby hermitage of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul, where he would spend the last 23 years of his life.

In this wind-beaten stone hermitage, Charbel led a life of extreme asceticism: he slept little, ate only once a day, rarely spoke, and spent long hours before the Blessed Sacrament. He lived in absolute silence, entirely united to Christ. He celebrated Mass every day with such intensity that his confreres were overwhelmed.

He died on 24 December 1898, in the midst of a Eucharistic celebration, after pronouncing the words of the offertory: "Father of truth, here is your Son, a victim pleasing in your sight". His life was one long act of offering.

Countless miracles

Not long after his death, extraordinary phenomena were reported: a strange light emanated from his tomb, his body remained incorrupt for several decades, and countless physical and spiritual cures were reported by those who came to pray near him.

Still today, tens of thousands of faithful, Christians and Muslims alike, flock to the Annaya monastery every year to confide in him their sufferings. Many testify to graces received, conversions, reconciliations or healings.

Canonised in 1977 by Pope Paul VI, Saint Charbel has become a symbol of spiritual unity between East and West, between silence and power, between poverty and fruitfulness.

A light for our world

Saint Charbel reminds our restless age that holiness is not in restlessness or in great visible works, but in the heart given to God without sharing. He is a master of silence, a witness to pure prayer, a guide for those who seek God in the dark.

Through his intercession, many sick people find strength and consolation. Through his example, many rediscover a taste for the interior life and union with God.

Prayer to Saint Charbel

Saint Charbel,

you who lived hidden from the eyes of the world,

but so close to the Heart of God,

teach us interior silence and fidelity in the shadows.

You who left everything to live only by the Eucharist and prayer,

help us to find peace again in the presence of the Lord.

In your hands, so many sick people have found hope again:

intercede for us, for our wounded bodies, our tired hearts, our scattered souls.

May your gaze turned towards heaven inspire us,

and may your offered life teach us true happiness.

St. Charbel, friend of God,

pray for us.

Amen.
