The story of Saint Brigid

A childhood marked by faith and suffering

Saint Brigid was born in 1303 in Finsta, into a noble Swedish family. Her father, Birger Persson, was an influential and deeply Christian governor. From childhood, Brigitte showed exceptional spiritual sensitivity. At the age of 7, she had her first vision of Christ crucified, a deeply moving image that would mark her whole life. This vision was no mere impression: she entered into a personal and burning relationship with the suffering Christ.

At 13, she was married to Ulf Gudmarsson, a pious young nobleman. From this union eight children were born, including the future Saint Catherine of Sweden. Despite her domestic, political and social duties, Brigitte remained focused on God, living the life of a fervent Christian wife. She founded hospitals, helped the poor and supported the works of the Church.

From widow to messenger of Heaven

After more than 25 years of happy marriage, her husband died in 1344 at Alvastra Abbey, while they had made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela together. This time of mourning became a spiritual turning point for Brigitte. She chose a life of prayer, penance and retreat. From then on, her visions multiplied: Christ, the Virgin Mary and the saints spoke to her and revealed messages for the world, the Church and the kings.

Brigitte began to write, or rather, she dictated to her confessors what was to become the famous Celestial Revelations, an impressive work combining mysticism, moral criticism and a call for reform of the Church. She did not hesitate to denounce the abuses of the clergy, religious hypocrisy and the injustice of the powerful. Through her, God seemed to want to awaken the Christian conscience of Europe.

Rome, the struggle of a prophetess

Sustained by her faith and a keen intelligence, Brigitte left Sweden for Rome, where she settled in 1350. There she lived in a small house near Piazza Farnese, between voluntary poverty, prayer, works of charity and talks with the highest authorities. With impressive courage, she tried to get the Pope to return from his exile in Avignon, urging unity in the Church and reform of morals.

She founded a new religious order, the Order of the Most Holy Saviour (the brigittines), based on a double community of monks and nuns living under the same rule in separate buildings, centred on the Eucharist, poverty, silence and intercession. Her order was approved after her death and bore fruit in Europe for a long time.

Brigitte died in Rome on 23 July 1373. Her body was repatriated to Sweden, to the monastery of Vadstena, which she had founded. She was canonised in 1391 and declared co-patroness of Europe in 1999 by Saint John Paul II.

A saint still relevant today

Saint Brigid unites an intense contemplative life and remarkable prophetic action. She embodies feminine holiness, not in submissive discretion, but in the luminous strength of a woman of prayer, vision and word. Her example shows that holiness can be rooted in motherhood, suffering, fidelity to duty... but also in the courage to denounce, to reform, to speak out loud and clear in the name of Christ.

Prayer to Saint Brigid

Saint Brigid,

you who saw Christ suffering and chose to love him to your very flesh,

teach us fidelity in trials, peace in humility,

and the strength to bear witness even when the world no longer wants to hear.

You who have been wife, mother, widow, prophetess and foundress,

give every woman the courage to be fully what God calls her to become.

Inspire our Church with the strength for profound reform,

and our world with the light of truth and compassion.

Burning with love for Jesus, you lived poor and free,

visit our hearts with the fire of your prayer.

Saint Brigitte, saint of Europe and witness to the living Christ,

intercede for us.

Amen.
