The prophet of fire

Elie, whose name means "My God is Yahweh", is one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament. He appeared in the ninth century BC, in the Kingdom of Israel, under the reign of King Ahab. He is a man with a fiery heart, entirely devoted to God, who rises up against the growing idolatry of his people and the corruption of the powerful.

His life is marked by episodes of extraordinary spiritual power: he announces a great drought to punish the people's infidelity, confronts the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel and brings down fire from heaven to prove that the Lord is the only true God. Elijah is the prophet of truth, fidelity and divine power. He lives in austerity, nourishes his faith in solitude, and becomes a model of courage and obedience to God.

God in the fire... but also in the whisper

After fighting tirelessly for justice and faith, Elijah finds himself exhausted. He flees to the desert, discouraged, and even asks God to die. But the Lord does not abandon him. He feeds him through an angel and leads him to Mount Horeb. There, God manifests himself not in a violent wind, nor in an earthquake, nor in fire... but in a gentle breeze, a gentle breath.

This episode reveals an essential facet of Elijah's God: a powerful God, certainly, but also a God of tenderness, who speaks to the heart in silence. It is in this intimate encounter that the prophet rises again and rediscovers his mission.

A living figure in the Christian tradition

Elie does not die like other men: he is taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, a fact that has nourished many Jewish and Christian traditions. Centuries later, he appeared alongside Moses at the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. The Church sees him as a model of the monk, the contemplative, the person who lives for God alone.

In Eastern tradition, Saint Elijah is a highly venerated saint, patron saint of many monasteries and protector against drought. He embodies spiritual ardour, zeal for the truth, unshakeable faith even in persecution.

Prayer to Saint Elijah

Saint Elijah, prophet of the Most High,

you who spoke with power in the name of the Lord,

give us your courage to defend the truth.

Teach us not to bend before injustice,

and never to serve any God but the living Lord.

You who met God in the gentle breeze,

teach us to recognise his voice in the silence.

Let our faith not rest on outward signs,

but on deep communion with his Spirit.

Prophet of fire and man of prayer,

intercede for us in times of inner dryness,

and lead us, as you did, to the mountain of God.

Saint Elijah, guide us to the transfigured Christ.
