The story of Saint Pius I, pope and martyr

Saint Pius I was one of the first successors of Saint Peter in the See of Rome. He lived in the 2nd century, at a time when the Church was still in its infancy, without legal recognition, often persecuted, and faced with numerous heresies. According to traditional sources, his pontificate lasted from around 140 to 155, during the reigns of the emperors Antoninus the Pious and perhaps Marcus Aurelius. It was a pivotal period in which Christianity was gradually becoming structured, while at the same time fighting for its survival and identity.

Origins and election

Historical information on Saint Pius I is scarce and sometimes uncertain. According to the Liber Pontificalis, he was born in Aquileia, in northern Italy, into a Christian family. His father's name was Rufinus. He is said to have been elected bishop of Rome after Anicet's pontificate, at a time when popes were chosen from among the Roman clergy for their faith, wisdom and ability to keep the young Church united.

A pope faced with heresies

The pontificate of Pius I was marked by an intense fight against heresies, particularly Gnosticism and Marcionism. These theological currents threatened the Christian faith by proposing dualistic and esoteric doctrines or by rejecting certain Old Testament writings. One of Pius I's main opponents was Marcion of Sinope, an influential theologian who advocated a good and merciful God of the New Testament, as opposed to the God of the Old Testament, whom he considered harsh and vengeful.

Pope Pius firmly opposed Marcion, condemned him as a heretic and excommunicated him. This stance enabled the Church of Rome to assert its doctrinal authority and unify beliefs in the face of divisions. It was also at this time that the first criteria began to be established for the constitution of the canon of Christian Scripture, i.e. the official list of inspired books.

Liturgical organisation and ecclesial discipline

Although sources remain vague, tradition attributes several initiatives in liturgical and disciplinary matters to St Pius I. He is thought to have encouraged the regular celebration of the Eucharist and worked to establish clearer rules for the life of Christian communities. Some texts attribute to him the institution of certain feasts or practices, such as the celebration of Easter on a fixed date according to Roman tradition, as opposed to the Eastern custom known as "quartodeciman".

He is also said to have promoted the veneration of martyrs and supported the consolidation of Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire, despite intermittent persecution. It is possible that he ordained several bishops and sent missionaries to various regions, contributing to the spread of Christianity.

The tradition of martyrdom

According to traditional accounts, Pius I himself suffered martyrdom for his faith, although the exact circumstances are unclear. Some say he was beheaded in Rome, others that he died in prison. The Liber Pontificalis calls him a martyr, which was a title of honour for early popes who suffered for the faith, even in the absence of precise historical details.

His tomb is said to have been located in the catacomb of Priscilla on the Via Salaria, a very ancient and revered burial place of the early Christians.

Memorial and cult

Saint Pius I is celebrated on 11 July in the liturgical calendar. He is honoured as one of the first guardians of the apostolic faith and as a defender of the doctrinal unity of the Church. His life, although little documented, bears witness to the fidelity of the first popes to their mission: to protect the Truth, guide the faithful, and serve Christ to the end, sometimes to the point of death.

In the history of the Church, he is also a symbol of continuity with the Apostles, of steadfastness in trials and vigilance against false doctrines. His memory reminds us that the Church, from its origins, was led by men of faith, often simple, but deeply rooted in the witness of the Risen Christ.

Prayer to Saint Pius I

Saint Pius, faithful shepherd of Christ's Church,

You who guarded the faith at the cost of your blood,

Support us in our struggles against error,

Give us to remain united to the Truth,

And intercede for us with the Father,

That our faith may always be alive and pure.

Amen.
