The Institution of the Eucharist
Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum. On this evening, Jesus shares his last meal with his disciples. This meal, known as the Last Supper, becomes a defining moment for Christians.
During this meal, Jesus takes the bread and says, "This is my body." Then he takes the cup: "This is my blood."
He leaves more than just a memory. He gives himself.
The washing of feet
That evening, another gesture shocked the disciples. Jesus rose from the table, took a cloth and washed the feet of his apostles. Washing feet was a task reserved for servants. By humbling himself in this way, Jesus showed that true authority comes through service. He taught that Christian love is not just words, but concrete action. Maundy Thursday is a lesson in humility.
Love to the end
After the meal, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane. He prays in anguish, aware of the Passion that awaits him.
Holy Thursday reveals to us a lucid love. Jesus knows what is going to happen, and yet he moves forward freely.
He chooses to give himself.
Entering into the mystery
The celebration of Holy Thursday ends in silence. The tabernacle is emptied. The bells are silent. The Church enters a time of deep contemplation. This day invites us to contemplate the mystery of self-giving. Am I ready to love unconditionally? Am I ready to serve without expecting anything in return? Holy Thursday teaches us that greatness is found in humility.
Prayer for Maundy Thursday
Lord Jesus,
on this Maundy Thursday,
teach me to love as you love.
Give me a humble heart
and a willingness to serve.
May I recognise your presence
in the Eucharist and in others.
Amen.
