An effort suited to your circumstances
Every year, the same question arises: what am I going to do for Lent? Should I give up chocolate, stop using social media, get up earlier to pray?
Choosing your effort should not be a decision taken lightly, but neither should it become a source of pressure. Lent is not a sporting challenge. It is an inner journey. The right effort is one that truly helps us to grow.
Identify what is taking up too much space
To choose a relevant effort, it can be helpful to ask yourself a simple question: what is taking up too much space in my life?
It could be a habit, a comfort, an addiction, or an attitude. Sometimes it is not something "bad", but simply something excessive.
The Lenten effort then becomes a way to rebalance one's life. Not to punish oneself, but to free oneself.
A realistic and faithful effort
It is better to make a small effort for forty days than to make a big commitment and give up after a week. If it is too easy, it will not bring about much change. What is important is faithfulness. Regularity shapes the heart much more than occasional intensity. Combining fasting, prayer and sharing The effort of Lent should not be solely about deprivation. It can also be a positive commitment. Fasting from something can free up time for prayer. Limiting certain expenses can allow for an act of sharing. Making an effort to improve one's character can improve one's relationships. A good Lenten effort connects these three dimensions.
Listen to your heart
Finally, it is good to ask God to guide your choice. A simple prayer can enlighten your decision.
What area of my life needs to be transformed?
Where am I called to grow?
Lent is not a competition. It is a dialogue between God and us.
Choosing your effort means accepting to enter into this dialogue with sincerity.
Prayer for choosing your Lenten effort
Lord,
enlighten my heart during this season of Lent.
Show me the effort I need to make.
Give me the strength to remain faithful.
May each small step bring me closer to you.
Amen.
