A childhood marked by poverty
Bernadette Soubirous was born on 7 January 1844 in Lourdes, into a very modest family. Her father was a miller, but the family soon fell on hard times financially. They ended up living in an old disused prison called the Cachot.Bernadette was a frail child, often ill, poorly educated and behind in her catechism studies. There was nothing particularly remarkable about her. She could neither read nor write well. Yet it was to her that one of the greatest spiritual missions of the 19th century would be entrusted.
The apparitions of 1858
On 11 February 1858, when she was 14 years old, Bernadette had her first apparition at the grotto of Massabielle. In total, she saw the Virgin Mary 18 times between February and July 1858.
During the first visions, she spoke of a "beautiful Lady". It was only later that the Lady revealed her identity: "I am the Immaculate Conception". This statement was surprising, as Bernadette, who had little education, could not have invented such a precise theological expression.
Despite questioning, pressure and mockery, Bernadette remained steadfast in her testimony. She sought neither glory nor recognition. She simply repeated what she had seen and heard.
A hidden life after Lourdes
After the apparitions, Bernadette chose to withdraw from the media frenzy. In 1866, she entered the Sisters of Charity in Nevers. She left Lourdes never to return.
In Nevers, she led a simple and discreet life. She worked in the convent infirmary despite her fragile health. She suffered greatly physically, particularly from asthma and bone tuberculosis.
She died on 16 April 1879 at the age of 35.
Her canonisation and legacy
Bernadette was beatified in 1925 and then canonised in 1933 by Pius XI. Today, her body rests at the Saint-Gildard convent in Nevers, where it is preserved and on display. Her message is simple: humility, faithfulness and trust. Bernadette never sought to be the centre of attention. She always repeated: "I am not responsible for making you believe, I am responsible for telling you." Her story continues to inspire millions of pilgrims around the world.
Prayer to Saint Bernadette
Saint Bernadette,
you who welcomed the message from Heaven with simplicity,
teach us to remain humble in our faith.
Give us the courage to bear witness with truth.
Help us to trust even in times of trial.
May your example guide us to God.
Amen.
