11 February 1858 in the heart of the Pyrenees

On 11 February 1858, in the small town of Lourdes, a 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous went with her sister and a friend to the rock of Massabielle to gather wood. It was cold. Her family lived in extreme poverty, in the town's former dungeon. While the other two girls crossed the stream, Bernadette stayed behind. The vision near the cave

Bernadette suddenly hears a noise like a gust of wind. Yet nothing is moving around her. Looking up towards the cave of Massabielle, she sees a "beautiful Lady" dressed in white, with a blue belt and a yellow rose on each foot.

The Lady did not speak during this first apparition. She simply made the sign of the cross and invited Bernadette to pray the rosary with her. Despite her surprise, the young girl felt a deep sense of peace, a gentle and luminous presence.

No one around her saw the vision. But for Bernadette, what she experienced was real, powerful and unforgettable.

The beginning of a series of apparitions

This first encounter on 11 February 1858 was only the beginning. Between February and July, Bernadette experienced a total of 18 apparitions. During one of them, the Lady revealed her identity, saying, "I am the Immaculate Conception."

Very quickly, the news spread throughout Lourdes and the entire region. Some doubted, others believed. But when Bernadette discovered a spring of water in the grotto, crowds began to flock to the site.

Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes welcomes millions of pilgrims every year who come to pray, ask for graces or give thanks.
