The question runs through the entire Christian faith. Why did God choose Mary, a simple, unassuming young woman, to become the mother of his Son? This choice was neither arbitrary nor symbolic. It reveals profoundly the way in which God acts in human history.
To understand why God chose the Virgin Mary is to better understand the heart of God himself.
A choice based on humility and simplicity
God did not choose Mary for her power, wealth or place in the world. He chose her for her humility. Mary lived out of sight, in a simple life, with no particular prestige.
This choice reveals a fundamental truth of the Christian faith. God does not look for what shines in the eyes of men. He looks at the heart. Mary embodies this inner simplicity that allows God to act freely.
Through her, God shows that greatness is often born in silence.
A heart totally available to God's will
If God chose Mary, it was also for her inner availability. At the Annunciation, Mary did not understand everything, but she trusted. Her yes is free, conscious and total.
God deeply respects human freedom. He does not impose himself. He waits for a response. Mary thus becomes the one who agrees to cooperate fully in the divine project.
Her yes opens the door to the Incarnation. Without this consent, the history of salvation would have taken another form.
A faith lived in trust and abandonment
God chose Mary for her faith. A simple faith, but a profound one. She accepts to move forward without mastering the future, without human guarantees.
Throughout her life, Mary goes through misunderstanding, exile, poverty and suffering. Yet she remains faithful. This constant trust makes her a safe place to welcome the mystery of God.
God entrusts his Son to her who will know how to love without possessing and believe without seeing.
A sign for all humanity
By choosing Mary, God also sends a message to all people. He shows that everyone, whatever their condition, can be chosen and loved by God.
Mary is not exceptional because of her social position, but because of her faith. She thus becomes an accessible, close, deeply human model.
Through her, God reminds us that holiness is possible in an ordinary life.
Prayer to the Virgin Mary, chosen by God
Virgin Mary,
you whom God chose for your humble and available heart,
teach us to trust without understanding everything.
Help us to say yes to God in simplicity,
and to welcome his will into our lives.
Make our hearts a place open to his love,
as yours has been.
Amen.
