A doctor at the heart of the faith
Saint Pantaleon was born in Nicomedia (now Turkey) at the end of the 3rd century, into a noble family. His name means "all compassionate". His father, Eustorgius, was a pagan, but his mother, Eubulus, was a Christian. She died when he was still young, and he was brought up in the pagan faith. Gifted in the sciences, he studied medicine with one of the most famous physicians of the time and soon became a respected practitioner at the court of the Emperor Maximian.
His life was turned upside down when he met a Christian priest, Hermolaos. The latter introduced him to Christianity and invited him to reflect on the power of Christ in the art of healing. Pantaleon began to heal not only through his medical skills, but also through prayer. One day, he healed a blind man in the name of Jesus. This miracle confirmed his faith: he asked to be baptised and devoted his life to serving the sick, free of charge.
The doctor of bodies and souls
Becoming a Christian doctor, Pantaleon healed without ever asking for fees. He visited the poorest, consoled the dying, healed the wounded and prayed with the sick. He quickly became known as a doctor full of mercy and faith, which aroused the jealousy of his pagan colleagues.
The latter denounced him to the Emperor Maximian as a Christian. The emperor, who held him in high esteem, first tried to persuade him to renounce his faith. But Pantaleon gently and firmly refused. Then began a series of terrible tortures: he was burnt with torches, thrown into molten lead, tied to a wheel bristling with blades, abandoned to wild animals... but he miraculously emerged unscathed each time.
Finally, he was beheaded in the year 305. According to tradition, when he is struck by the sword, his blood mixes with milk, and a dry olive tree nearby instantly turns green again. He dies muttering a prayer for his executioners.
Patron saint of doctors and the sick
Early on, Saint Pantaleon was honoured as a martyr and healer. The Orthodox Church included him among the "anargyric saints" - holy healers who do not ask for money. In the West, his cult developed mainly in the Middle Ages, particularly in Germany, France (especially Cologne and Troyes), and southern Italy.
Today he is considered the patron saint of doctors, nurses and the sick, invoked for difficult healings and delicate care. He is one of the fourteen auxiliary saints, a group of protective saints who are very popular in times of epidemics.
His name, in its eastern form "Pantaleimon", is still highly venerated in the Eastern Churches, and many monasteries are dedicated to him, particularly on Mount Athos.
