Unchanging foundations
Since the origins of the Gospel, Christian values have shaped the lives of believers and inspired their day-to-day choices. More than just a moral code, they express God's call to live in truth, love and fidelity. These seven essential values are guidelines for building a life that is upright, fruitful and open to others. They are neither fixed nor abstract: they are embodied in our relationships, our decisions, our inner struggles.
Faith: the backbone of the soul
Faith is that living link between God and man. It is not just intellectual belief, but total trust, surrender into the hands of the Father. It enables us to walk in the dark, to stand firm in the face of trial, and to see beyond what the world has to offer. Faith transforms everything, even doubt, into a path towards God.
Hope: light in the night
Hope is not an illusion or a flight, but an inner strength that enables us to wait for the fulfilment of God's promises. It sheds light on moments of suffering and discouragement. Christian hope knows that life has meaning, that death is not the end, and that love will always have the last word.
Charity: the beating heart of the Gospel
"Love one another as I have loved you." Charity goes beyond simple benevolence. It is a gift of self, an unconditional acceptance of others, even enemies. It is demanding, but fruitful. It pushes us to go beyond ourselves, to forgive, to become servants. It is the visible reflection of God's love.
Justice: thirsting for righteousness
To be just is not to judge harshly, but to seek the good of everyone. Christian justice is inseparable from mercy. It demands fairness, the dignity of every human being, and respect for the truth. It is opposed to indifference, lies and social injustice.
Prudence: wisdom in motion
Prudence is not fear of action, but the art of discernment. It helps us to choose the right thing at the right time, to speak up when we need to, to keep quiet when it's more appropriate to pray. It does not stifle the impulse of the heart, it directs it towards the true and the beautiful.
Temperance: inner strength
Temperance is balance in the use of goods, pleasures, emotions. It is not deprivation, but control. It allows us to be free in the face of our desires, to love without possessing, to enjoy without falling into excess. It is joyful sobriety, discipline of heart.
Strength: faithfulness in trial
Christian strength is not hardness, but humble courage. It enables us to resist evil, to remain standing when everything falters. It is nourished by prayer, faith and the support of our brothers and sisters. It is essential if we are to follow Christ to the end, even when the cross becomes heavy.
Living these values today
In a world that values speed, personal success and comfort, these values may seem to go against the grain. And yet they are sources of peace, coherence and deep joy. They root us in God's love and open us up to our brothers and sisters, in all simplicity.
Prayer to grow in the Christian virtues
Lord,
You who are the source of all light,
Grow in me the faith that enlightens,
The hope that sustains,
And the charity that kindles.
Inspire my choices with prudence,
Guide my actions with justice,
Purify my desires with temperance,
Close my heart with strength.
May these virtues become in me paths to You,
And may they shine around me like a gentle light.
Amen.
