A Little-Known Incense with Ancient Power

The Asa Foetida, often called "Persian ferula" or "devil's resin", is an aromatic substance derived from a plant in the Apiaceae family, closely related to fennel and aniseed. Despite its particularly strong odour in its raw state, this resin has been used for thousands of years as incense in religious rituals, spiritual practices and traditional medicine.

His name, which means "fetid resin", may come as a surprise, but once burnt, Asa Foetida gives off a rich, spicy aroma, often compared to garlic or pepper. It is particularly prized for its purifying properties, capable of dispelling negative influences and creating a climate of protection and serenity.

Origins and History of Asa Foetida

Asa Foetida is mainly harvested in Iran, Afghanistan and India, where it grows wild in arid and mountainous regions.

Its use dates back to ancient times, when it was considered a sacred and medicinal substance:

  • In ancient Egypt, it was used to purify temples and accompany funeral rites.
  • In the Roman Empire, it was used as incense in sacrifices and was valued for its digestive virtues.
  • In Indian tradition, it is a component of many incenses used to ward off malevolent spirits and encourage meditation.

In Christian and Orthodox culture, although less common than frankincense or myrrh, it was sometimes used in rituals of spiritual protection, particularly to bless homes and ward off demonic influences.

Making and Harvesting Asa Foetida Incense

Asa Foetida is extracted from the root of the Ferula Asafoetida, an herbaceous plant that can reach over 2 metres in height. The resin is harvested using an age-old process:

  1. Incision of the trunk and roots: A milky white liquid flows out, then thickens on contact with air.
  2. Drying and oxidation : The resin takes on an orange-brown hue and develops its powerful aroma.
  3. Refining : After several weeks, it is transformed into grains or powder to be used as incense or medicine.

Once burnt, Asa Foetida releases a dense smoke, with woody and slightly sulphurous notes, which quickly mellow to give way to an atmosphere conducive to concentration and prayer.
