The Sacred Heart of Mary, also known as the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is one of the most moving symbols of the Christian faith. It represents all the love, tenderness, faithfulness and trust that the Virgin Mary showed towards God throughout her life. Through her Heart, Christians discover a caring mother, always ready to listen, to comfort and to lead souls to her Son, Jesus Christ.
For centuries, the Church has invited the faithful to contemplate the Heart of Mary in order to learn from her humility, obedience to God and love for one’s neighbour. This devotion continues to touch millions of believers across the world today.
What does the Sacred Heart of Mary represent?
In Christian iconography, the Heart of Mary is often depicted surrounded by roses or lilies, pierced by a sword and sometimes surrounded by flames. Each element has a profound spiritual significance.
The sword recalls the prophecy of the elderly Simeon at the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple:
“And a sword will pierce your own soul too. ” (Lk 2:35)
These words foretell the sufferings Mary will have to endure during her life, particularly when she sees her Son condemned and crucified.
The flames, for their part, symbolise the ardour of her love for God and for humanity. They remind us that Mary’s heart burns with perfect charity, wholly turned towards the Lord.
The roses represent the purity, spiritual beauty and virtues of the Virgin Mary.
The heart of an exceptional mother
Mary is, above all, a mother. Chosen by God to bear the Saviour of the world, she lived every stage of Jesus’ life with exemplary fidelity.
She received the angel Gabriel’s announcement with confidence:
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:38)
Through her “yes”, she opens the door to the mystery of the Incarnation. Her heart then becomes the first sanctuary where Jesus dwells.
Throughout the Gospel, Mary discreetly accompanies her Son. She is present in Bethlehem, during the flight into Egypt, in Nazareth, at the wedding at Cana and finally at the foot of the Cross.
Her maternal love never wavers, even in the most painful moments.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Church often speaks of the ‘Immaculate Heart of Mary’ to remind us that Mary was preserved from original sin by an exceptional grace from God.
This purity does not mean that she was spared trials. On the contrary, Mary experienced anxieties, sufferings and misunderstandings. However, she always maintained complete trust in the divine will.
Her heart is immaculate because it is entirely turned towards God. It is not divided between love of the world and love of the Lord. It remains faithful in all circumstances.
For Christians, the Immaculate Heart of Mary thus becomes a model to follow. It invites us to purify our thoughts, intentions and actions in order to draw closer to God.
Mary at the foot of the Cross
One of the most moving moments in Mary’s life is her presence at the foot of the Cross.
Whilst many disciples fled, she remained faithful to her suffering Son. She shares in his Passion inwardly and offers her sorrow to the Father.
At that moment, Jesus entrusts the whole of humanity to her:
“Woman, behold your son.”
“Behold your mother. ” (Jn 19:26-27)
From that day onwards, Mary has been regarded as the spiritual mother of all believers.
Her heart, already wounded by the suffering of seeing Jesus crucified, opens even wider to welcome each one of us.
The Apparitions of Fatima and the Heart of Mary
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary has grown significantly thanks to the apparitions of Fatima in Portugal in 1917.
The Virgin Mary appeared to three young shepherds: Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta. She asked them for prayer, conversion and the daily recitation of the Rosary.
During these apparitions, Mary showed her Heart surrounded by thorns, symbolising the sins that wound her maternal love.
She declared:
“My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the path that will lead you to God. ”
This promise continues today to comfort many of the faithful who entrust themselves to her intercession.
Why pray to the Immaculate Heart of Mary?
Praying to the Heart of Mary does not mean turning one’s gaze away from Jesus. Quite the contrary.
Mary always leads us to her Son. Her sole desire is to bring people closer to God.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary enables us:
to learn to trust in God;
to grow in faith;
to receive comfort and consolation;
to ask for her maternal protection;
to find inner peace;
to persevere through trials;
to deepen one’s life of prayer.
Many believers testify to having regained hope and serenity by entrusting their difficulties to the Heart of Mary.
The month of June and the Heart of Mary
The month of June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. However, the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is celebrated immediately after that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This liturgical proximity recalls the unique bond that unites the two hearts.
The Heart of Jesus is the source of salvation.
The Heart of Mary receives this salvation and responds to it perfectly through her love and faithfulness.
Contemplating these two hearts allows us to better understand God’s plan of love for humanity.
How can we honour the Immaculate Heart of Mary?
There are several spiritual practices through which we can honour the Immaculate Heart of Mary:
praying the Rosary every day;
meditating on the mysteries of Christ’s life;
consecrating one’s family to the Heart of Mary;
wearing a Miraculous Medal;
taking part in the First Saturdays of the month;
reading the Gospels;
performing works of charity;
asking for her intercession every day.
These simple gestures help to increase God’s love in our lives.
A mother who never ceases to watch over her children
For over two thousand years, Christians have turned to Mary with confidence. In her, they find a caring mother who understands their joys, their sorrows, their worries and their hopes.
The Sacred Heart of Mary reminds us that we are never alone. In moments of doubt as well as in moments of joy, Mary watches over each of her children and accompanies them towards Jesus.
Her heart remains a refuge of peace, tenderness and mercy.
As we contemplate the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we discover the most beautiful example of faithful love for God. We learn to say ‘yes’ to the divine will, to persevere through trials and to live each day with trust.
