A small village that became an international sanctuary
It all began in 1858 with the apparitions in Lourdes. At the time, it was just a small, modest and little-known town in the Pyrenees. Today, Lourdes is one of the largest Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
Every year, millions of people from every continent visit Lourdes. Some come to ask for healing, others to give thanks for a blessing received, and still others simply to pray in the silence of the grotto.
The sanctuary and the Massabielle cave
At the heart of Lourdes lies the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. This is where the Massabielle cave is located, where Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary.
The grotto remains the most moving place in the sanctuary. Pilgrims place candles there, touch the rock and entrust their prayer intentions. Right next to it flows the spring discovered by Bernadette on 25 February 1858. Many come to drink this water or bathe in the sanctuary's pools.
Several basilicas have been built around the grotto, forming a vast architectural complex capable of hosting large celebrations.
A place marked by prayer and the sick
Lourdes is particularly linked to sick and disabled people. Every year, volunteer hospitaliers accompany thousands of vulnerable pilgrims. The evening torchlight processions have become emblematic. Thousands of lights illuminate the esplanade in reverent silence, creating a unique atmosphere.
Since 1992, 11 February has also been World Day of the Sick, directly linked to Lourdes and its message of hope.
A message that is still relevant today
Today, Lourdes is not just a tourist site. It is a place of living faith. Despite the passing of time, the message remains the same: prayer, conversion, trust in God. In a world often marked by turmoil and uncertainty, Lourdes offers a space of peace. Many testify to having found the strength to move forward, even without a visible miracle.
It is not only history that attracts people to Lourdes. It is the presence, the simplicity, and the impression that heaven once looked down upon the earth.
Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes,
you who continue to draw so many hearts to your sanctuary,
teach us to come to God with confidence.
Support the sick and those who accompany them.
Make our lives places of peace and hope.
May your light illuminate our path.
Amen.
