What is the rosary?
The rosary is both an object and a prayer. It consists of five decades, each corresponding to a mystery in the life of Jesus. Each decade is punctuated by the recitation of simple, repeated prayers that encourage contemplation and meditation.
Praying the rosary therefore means praying part of the rosary, meditating on a specific event in the life of Christ.
The prayers of the rosary
The rosary is based on the fundamental prayers of the Christian faith. It includes the Creed, the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be. These prayers, known to all, allow everyone to easily enter into prayer, regardless of their age or spiritual journey.
The rosary prayer begins with the sign of the cross. We then recite the Creed to affirm our faith. On the first large bead, we say the Our Father. On the next three small beads, we recite three Hail Marys, traditionally to ask for faith, hope and charity. This introduction is concluded with a Glory Be to the Father.
The five decades of the rosary
Each decade begins with the announcement of a mystery, which is meditated upon internally. Then recite one Our Father, followed by ten Hail Marys. The decade concludes with a Glory Be. This repetition is not mechanical. It helps to calm the mind and allow the meditated mystery to nourish the prayer. Between decades, it is possible to add a personal intention or a short time of silence.
How to meditate while praying the Rosary?
Meditation is at the heart of the Rosary. While reciting the prayers, one can imagine the scene of the mystery, reflect on what it says about the life of Christ, or offer it up for a particular intention. It is not necessary to do everything perfectly. Praying the rosary is a simple and free experience. Even when your attention wanders, the prayer continues to bear fruit through the faithfulness of the gesture. When and where to pray the rosary? The rosary can be prayed at any time of the day. It can be prayed alone, with family or in a group. At home, while walking, on public transport or in a place of contemplation, it adapts to everyday life. Praying the Rosary regularly, even briefly, helps to establish a peaceful and profound rhythm of prayer.
A simple and faithful prayer
Praying the Rosary is choosing a humble, repetitive and confident prayer. It is allowing Mary to accompany you as you contemplate the life of Christ and move forward on the path of faith, step by step, in peace.
