The apparitions on Rue du Bac in Paris
The history of the Miraculous Medal began in 1830, in Paris, in the chapel on Rue du Bac. The Virgin Mary appeared to a young nun, Sister Catherine Labouré, a member of the Daughters of Charity. During these apparitions, Mary showed great gentleness and entrusted her with a simple message, intended to be widely disseminated.
During the vision of 27 November 1830, Catherine saw the Virgin Mary standing on a globe, crushing the serpent under her feet. From her open hands flowed rays of light, symbols of the graces granted to those who ask for them with faith. Around the Virgin appeared the invocation: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you." During this apparition, the Virgin asked that a medal be struck according to the model shown to Catherine. She promised that those who wore this medal with confidence would receive great graces. The request was forwarded to the Archbishop of Paris, and after a period of discernment, the medal was authorised to be struck. From the very beginning, the medal spread rapidly. Numerous testimonies of conversions, healings and spiritual graces were reported. It was during this period that the medal took the name "Miraculous Medal" because of the spiritual fruits observed in those who wore it.
A medal rich in symbolism
Every detail of the Miraculous Medal has a specific meaning. On the obverse, the Virgin Mary is depicted with her hands open, letting rays of light flow from them. Some rays are weaker or absent, symbolising graces that are not asked for.
On the reverse side of the medal is the letter M surmounted by a cross, symbolising Mary's union with Christ's sacrifice. Below are two hearts, that of Jesus surrounded by thorns and that of Mary pierced by a sword, recalling their shared love and suffering. The twelve stars surrounding the ensemble refer to the apostles and Mary's heavenly crown. The message of the Miraculous Medal is very simple. It invites us to trust, pray and surrender. Wearing this medal is not about seeking a magical object, but about remembering that Mary intercedes for those who turn to her with faith. Even today, the Miraculous Medal is worn by believers of all ages. It accompanies moments of joy as well as trials, recalling the maternal presence of Mary and the love of God in everyday life.
A medal passed down through the generations
Often given at a baptism, communion or other important moment in life, the Miraculous Medal is passed down from generation to generation. It becomes an object steeped in history, prayer and trust, sometimes worn for a lifetime.
