Why is the Virgin Mary at the heart of Christmas?

At Christmas, the light that catches our eyes is that of the Christ Child, born in the poverty of a cot. Yet at the heart of this holy night, a presence remains essential, silent and deeply loving. The Virgin Mary occupies a central place in the celebration of Christmas, not by chance, but because she is the one through whom God chose to give himself to the world.

To understand why Mary is at the heart of Christmas is to enter into the mystery of a God who comes through the humility, trust and love of a mother.

Mary, God's chosen way into the world

Christmas is not just the birth of Jesus, it is the fulfilment of a divine promise. And this promise is fulfilled through Mary. God could have chosen a thousand other paths, but he chose to go through the free and trusting heart of a young woman.

By saying yes at the Annunciation, Mary becomes the setting for the Incarnation. At Christmas, this choice of God is fully revealed. Mary is the one who bears God, who gives him to the world, who allows the invisible to become visible. Without her, Christmas would not exist as we celebrate it.

She is at the heart of the feast because she is at the beginning of this mystery.

Mary, Mother of God and Mother of Men

At Christmas, Mary is not just a woman who gives birth. She is the Mother of God. This profoundly mysterious title places her at the centre of the Christmas event. She envelops the Saviour of the world in tenderness.

But by becoming the mother of Jesus, Mary also symbolically becomes the mother of all people. Through her gaze on the Child, she welcomes the whole of humanity. Christmas thus becomes a celebration of closeness, gentleness and mercy.

Mary reminds us that God does not come to judge, but to love, and that this love comes through simple, maternal gestures.

Mary, a figure of expectation and hope

The feast of Christmas is preceded by Advent, a time of expectation. And Mary is the perfect figure. She carries Jesus in silence, in hope, in trust, without seeking to hasten the time.

At Christmas, Mary teaches us that waiting is not empty, but fruitful. She shows us how to welcome God with patience, even when everything seems fragile or uncertain.

This is why she is at the heart of Christmas. She embodies this expectation inhabited by faith, this hope that lights up the night.

Mary, a discreet but essential presence in the crib

In all the representations of the Nativity, Mary is there. Silent, recollected, contemplative. She does not take up all the space, but she is indispensable. Her simple presence gives the scene its full meaning.

She invites us to experience Christmas in a different way, away from the hustle and bustle and noise. Mary teaches us to contemplate, to welcome, to let God be born into our lives without trying to control everything.

Christmas then becomes an inner celebration, a time to open our hearts to what is essential.

Prayer to the Virgin Mary at the heart of Christmas

Virgin Mary,
you who carried Jesus in silence and trust,
teach us to welcome God into our lives.
Help us to live Christmas with a simple and open heart,
away from noise and distractions.
Make faith, hope and love grow in us,
so that Jesus may find a humble dwelling place in our hearts.
Amen.
