Biblical origin and mission
Saint Raphael is one of the three archangels mentioned in the Bible, along with Michael and Gabriel. His name means "God heals". His main appearance is in the Book of Tobit, where he appears as a travelling companion for Tobit, the son of Tobit. Throughout the story, Raphael protects, advises and guides the young man, before revealing his true identity as one sent by God.
Raphael, angel of healing
Raphael is known for healing Tobit of his blindness and for protecting Sara, Tobias's future wife, from the attacks of a demon. His mission as a healer goes beyond the biblical account: he is the angel invoked to obtain health for body and soul, but also inner and spiritual healing.
Protector of travellers
Because he accompanied Tobias on his journey, Raphael is also considered the protector of travellers and pilgrims. He symbolises God's constant presence at our side as we travel, make choices and take important decisions. His protection is often invoked for travel, but also for periods of transition and change in life.
Spiritual significance
Saint Raphael reminds us that God cares for his people not only by defending and proclaiming, but also by healing and accompanying. He is the embodiment of divine mercy, which restores and uplifts. His figure invites believers to entrust their wounds, illnesses and uncertainties to the Lord, in the certainty that he acts out of love.
Conclusion
Saint Raphael the Archangel is the sign of God's tenderness that heals and guides. His example encourages us to go forward confidently on our earthly and spiritual journeys, sure that God never leaves us alone.
