What is a novena?
The word "novena" comes from the Latin novem, meaning "nine". A novena is a prayer repeated for nine consecutive days, often accompanied by a particular intention. It is a very ancient form of devotion, originating in the nine days of prayer that the apostles and the Virgin Mary spent between the Ascension of Christ and Pentecost. This time of waiting and intercession has been sanctified by the Church and has become a model of persevering prayer.
Today, novenas are often prayed to ask for a special grace, honour a saint, prepare for a liturgical feast or simply to strengthen one's faith.
How to make a novena?
Making a novena does not simply mean reciting a prayer nine times. It is a commitment of the heart. Here's how to live a novena to the full:
Choose the intention: before starting, it's a good idea to clearly formulate the intention: healing, conversion, employment, inner peace, etc.
Choose the form of the novena: some novenas are very codified, such as that of Saint Rita, Saint Joseph or the Sacred Heart. Booklets or prayers can be found online. Others are more personal, and you can compose them yourself with psalms, meditations, the rosary, etc.
Pray nine days in a row: the key is regularity. We pray every day, preferably at the same time. You can light a candle, create a prayer corner, read the Gospel or combine it with a short fast or offering.
Close with confidence: at the end of the nine days, it is good to give thanks, even if the grace asked for did not manifest itself immediately. Faith teaches that every sincere prayer is heard.
What is the spiritual significance of a novena?
To do a novena is to enter into an active process of faith. It invites us to perseverance, trust and humility. It helps us to place our intentions in the hands of God or his saints, not as a magic formula, but as an act of abandonment and love.
Some people bear witness to spectacular graces, others to an inner change, a new-found peace or a new light on their lives. Whether it obtains a visible favour or not, a novena always transforms those who pray it with faith.
When to do a novena?
There is no "obligatory" time, but certain periods lend themselves particularly well:
- In preparation for a feast (eg. Novenas for the Immaculate Conception, Christmas...)
- Before an important decision
- In a period of suffering or doubt
- To accompany a loved one in trial
- In thanksgiving, to thank God or a saint
A practice that is still relevant today
Novenas are not prayers from another time. On the contrary, they correspond to a deep need for stability, regularity and spiritual deepening. In our fast-paced world, they offer a place to pause and commune with God. They also create links between believers: many pray novenas together, with family, friends or via networks.
Concluding prayer
Lord Jesus,
You who promised to hear those who persevere in prayer,
Teach me to pray with faith,
Not to become discouraged when everything seems silent,
But to continue for nine days, and even longer,
To knock on your door with confidence.
Through the intercession of the saints,
Hear the supplications I entrust to you,
And make my life a faithful praise of your grace.
Amen.
