Who is Saint Rita? Saint of Desperate Causes

Saint Rita of Cascia, born in 1381 in Roccaporena, a small hamlet near Cascia, Italy, is one of the most popular saints of the Catholic Church. Known as the "saint of impossible causes" or the "saint of hopeless causes", she left her mark on Christian history with a life marked by suffering, resignation and unshakeable faith.

From the moment she was born, her parents consecrated her to God. However, she did not immediately follow the religious path. Obeying her parents' wishes, she married Paolo Mancini at a very young age, a violent and impulsive man, often described as angry and harsh. Their marriage was marked by tension and violence, but Rita, through her gentleness, patience and faith, gradually managed to soften her husband. Together, they had two sons.

Widowed and battered mother

But the peace was short-lived. Paolo was murdered, the victim of political and family rivalries in a climate of vendetta common at the time. Rita's two sons, full of anger, wanted to avenge their father. Rita prayed intensely for them to desist from this vengeance, but she could not. She then asked God, in a radical act of faith, to call them back to Him rather than see them commit murder. Shortly afterwards, the two boys died of illness, reconciled with God.

Entering the convent despite the obstacles

Widowed and childless, Rita then expressed the wish to enter the Augustinian monastery in Cascia. But the nuns refused her entry, as her violent family history and the ongoing feuds between her husband's rival clans posed a problem for the community. Persevering, she prayed and interceded with her enemies for reconciliation. After succeeding in bringing peace between the feuding families, Rita was finally accepted into the convent at the age of 36.

A mystical and suffering life

Within the monastery, Rita led a life of prayer, penance and extreme austerity. She developed a deep mystical relationship with Christ crucified. In 1442, while praying before a crucifix, she received a stigmata: a wound on her forehead, similar to one of the thorns on Christ's crown. This painful, foul-smelling wound remained with her for the last fifteen years of her life. She saw it as a way of uniting her suffering with that of Christ.

Another famous miracle surrounds her death. Shortly before she died, ill and bedridden, she asked a cousin to bring her a rose from her garden in the middle of winter. The cousin obeyed, and indeed found a rose in flower on a bush covered in snow. This is why a rose is often associated with Saint Rita, a symbol of grace received against all odds.

Death and canonisation

Rita died on 22 May 1457 at the age of 76. As soon as she died, many faithful flocked to her bedside, and people soon began praying to her to obtain graces in the most desperate situations. Numerous miracles were reported, including inexplicable cures. Her body, on display in the shrine at Cascia, has remained amazingly well preserved.

She was beatified in 1628 by Pope Urban VIII and canonised in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. Since then, she has become one of the most invoked saints in the Catholic world, particularly in Italy, France, Latin America and the Philippines.

Why is she the saint of desperate causes?

Saint Rita experienced extreme trials: a difficult marriage, the violent loss of her husband, the death of her children, the rejection of her entry into a convent, physical and moral suffering. Yet through it all, she never lost her faith. Her patience, charity and abandonment to God's will made her a model of absolute trust in the most desperate human situations.

She is prayed to today for cases that are considered hopeless: incurable illnesses, irreversible break-ups, deep family conflicts, loneliness, extreme poverty, or deep spiritual difficulties. Through her intercession, the faithful find hope, inner peace and sometimes tangible miracles.

Saint Rita of Cascia, whose life was marked by pain but illuminated by God's love, became a refuge for wounded souls. She shows that even in the midst of misfortune, love, faith and perseverance can flourish. Her message is clear: no situation is truly hopeless when it is entrusted to God with faith and humility. That's why, even today, millions of people around the world turn to her with confidence, in the silence of their hearts or during great processions, convinced that where all seems lost, she can still open a path.
