Saint Stephen was one of the first seven deacons chosen by the apostles to serve the poor and proclaim the Word of God with zeal. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he courageously preached the truth of the Gospel, arousing the hostility of the religious leaders. Falsely accused, he gave his life in imitation of his Master: as he was about to die, he prayed for his executioners, saying: "Lord, do not count this sin against them". The first martyr of the Church, he is invoked as a model of fidelity, charity and forgiveness.
Powerful prayer to Saint Stephen
O glorious Saint Stephen, Christ's first martyr, you who were chosen to serve the Church in charity and faith, we come to you with a humble and trusting heart. Filled with the Holy Spirit, you spoke with wisdom and truth, unafraid of threats and persecution. Obtain for us the courage to bear witness to our faith, even when it costs us misunderstanding and rejection.
Saint Stephen, you who saw the heavens open and Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father, make our faith more lively and our hope stronger. When fear or discouragement overwhelm us, help us to lift our eyes to heaven for strength and consolation.
Apostle of charity, you who were chosen to serve the poor and widows, make our hearts generous and attentive to the needs of our brothers and sisters. Help us to recognise in every face the face of Christ, and to love without measure, in small things as in great.
Saint Stephen, you who forgave those who stoned you, obtain for us the grace of a merciful heart. Teach us to pray for those who hurt us, to forgive even in pain, and to respond to hatred with love. May your example lead us along the path of true peace.
First witness to the point of blood, support those who, even today, suffer persecution because of their faith. Protect them, strengthen them, and keep alive in them the certainty that Christ is victorious.
O holy martyr, intercede for our families, our communities and the whole Church. Present our prayers before the throne of God and obtain for us the grace of total fidelity to Christ, to the last breath of our lives.
Saint Stephen, pray for us and make us faithful in faith, charity and forgiveness.
