Intercessors for the impossible
In moments when everything seems blocked, when human ways out disappear, many Christians turn to what are known as "saints of lost causes". They are not magicians, but powerful intercessors, close to human suffering and full of compassion. Their role is to open a path where there is none, to rekindle hope, to remind us that for God, nothing is ever definitively lost.
These saints remind us that grace can arise from the very heart of despair, that light can still break through in the night. They are the companions of those who pray without seeing, of those who hope without understanding.
Saint Rita, the best known
Saint Rita of Cascia is undoubtedly the saint most invoked in desperate situations. Married to a violent man, she lost her two sons, entered a convent despite the obstacles, and wore a wound on her forehead until her death, mystically united to the suffering of Christ. She was entrusted with impossible cases: deep family conflicts, incurable illnesses, stalled legal cases.
She was called "the saint of the impossible", because she interceded with immense tenderness and astonishing strength. To her, we can entrust anything, especially that which is beyond our courage.
Saint Jude, the discreet apostle
Less well known but highly venerated in many countries, Saint Jude is one of the twelve apostles. He is invoked in desperate causes because he was sometimes confused with Judas, which meant that he was almost never invoked - he became the saint "of forgotten cases". This is precisely why he is entrusted with situations that no one is willing or able to resolve.
He is a faithful apostle, a bearer of the hope of the resurrection. His prayer helps us to believe that it is never too late for God.
Saint Expédit, the swift
Saint Expédit, a converted Roman soldier, is often depicted holding a cross with the word "HODIE" (today). He is invoked for urgent decisions, examinations, blocked procedures and immediate needs. He is associated with "urgent" prayers, not because God would be slow, but because our hearts sometimes need support in the moment.
He is often prayed to by young people, students, people in administrative or financial distress.
Who to pray to? What to ask for?
It's not about choosing "the right saint" like ticking a box. It's about letting ourselves be touched by their life witness, entrusting our burdens to them with faith. We can ask them to intercede for a concrete situation, but also to find inner peace, the courage to move forward, patience in times of trial.
Each saint is a mirror of God's tenderness. What they obtain is not always what we hoped for, but it is often what we really needed.
Prayer to the saints of lost causes
Lord Jesus,
You who know our most hidden struggles,
I come to you with what I can no longer bear.
Through the intercession of your faithful saints,
I entrust to you this cause which I lay at your feet.
Saint Rita, pray for me when all seems lost.
Saint Jude, support my faith when it wavers.
Saint Expedit, come to my aid in an emergency.
Give me to go forward in confidence,
even when I cannot see the end of the tunnel.
Grow hope in me,
and open a path where I see none.
Lord, I believe nothing is impossible to your love.
Amen.
