Diptych and Triptych Icon
Our religious shop from the Sanctuary of Lourdes offers a selection of icons in diptych and triptych formats. Diptych and triptych icons are sacred works of art with a long tradition in Christianity. These particular formats, where two panels (diptych) ...or three panels (triptych) are joined together, allow for a more elaborate representation of biblical scenes or holy figures. They are often used as objects of personal devotion or in liturgical contexts, symbolising the continuity of faith and the richness of Christian tradition.
In a diptych, the two panels complement each other harmoniously. It is common to see a representation of Christ on one panel and the Virgin Mary on the other, symbolising the relationship between the Saviour and his Mother. Other diptychs feature figures of patron saints, or scenes from the life of Christ or the Virgin, offering a meditation on the Incarnation or salvation. The triptych, with its three panels, allows for a more narrative composition. The central panel, often larger, is usually dedicated to a major scene or figure, such as Christ in Majesty, surrounded by two side panels depicting saints, scenes from the Gospel, or episodes from the life of Christ.
This format symbolically reflects the Trinity with its three distinct but united parts. Triptychs are often used in portable altars or for domestic altars, where they serve as a visual aid to prayer. Easily transportable, these icons are often used as aids to personal devotion, whether at home, while travelling, or in private chapels. When unfolded, they create a sacred space conducive to prayer, and when folded, they can be carefully protected or transported.
