Saint Sara, also known as Sara la Kali or Black Sara, is the patron saint of the gypsy people. Saint Sara welcomed the saints Marie Jacobé and Marie Salomé when they landed in French Provence after fleeing the Holy Land, and helped them with their mission. She is celebrated every May in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, where her statue is carried in procession to the sea, where she is symbolically immersed to recall her link with water and the welcoming of biblical refugees.
