What is a novena candle? A novena candle is a devotional candle traditionally associated with nine consecutive days of Catholic prayer. It serves as a visible reminder of a prayer intention and symbolises the light of Christ, perseverance and trust in God.
Why do Catholics pray a novena for nine days? The tradition recalls the period of prayer between the Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost, when the apostles gathered in prayer with Mary. Today, Catholics pray novenas to seek God's guidance, ask for particular graces or express thanksgiving.
Does a novena candle have to burn continuously for nine days? No. The essential element of a novena is praying for nine consecutive days, not keeping a flame burning without interruption. You can light your candle during daily prayer and extinguish it safely afterwards. Never leave a burning candle unattended or lit while sleeping.
How long does a 9 day sanctuary candle last? Many of our traditional sanctuary candles have an approximate total burning time of 9 to 10 days. Actual duration depends on the candle's composition, size and surrounding conditions. Always consult the individual product description.
What is the difference between a sanctuary candle and a votive candle? Sanctuary candles in our collection are generally designed for extended devotional use, often during a nine-day novena. Smaller votive candles usually have shorter burning times and are commonly used for individual prayer intentions in churches or at home.
Are your novena candles made from vegetable wax? Many models in our collection use vegetable-based wax or oil. The exact composition may vary between products, so check the description of the candle you wish to purchase.
Can I buy several novena candles together? Yes. Our sets of 20 sanctuary candles are a practical option for regular personal prayer, parish communities, prayer groups and those who prefer to purchase multiple candles at once.
Which Novena Candle Should You Choose for Your Prayer Intention?
Choosing a Catholic prayer candle often depends on your personal devotion or the intention you wish to entrust to God. Religious images and colours can help create a meaningful focus for prayer, but the candle itself does not possess supernatural powers.
Which novena candle should I choose for the Virgin Mary? Candles dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, the Miraculous Virgin or Our Lady Undoer of Knots are traditional choices for Marian devotion. They can accompany prayers for families, peace, spiritual guidance and personal difficulties.
Why light a candle to Our Lady of Lourdes? Lourdes is associated with the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. Lighting a candle recalls the prayers of pilgrims who visit the Grotto of Massabielle and entrust their intentions to the intercession of Mary.
What is a Saint Rita novena candle used for? Saint Rita of Cascia is traditionally invoked in difficult and seemingly impossible situations. A candle bearing her image can accompany nine days of prayer for strength, patience, reconciliation or hope.
Why choose a Saint Michael the Archangel candle? Saint Michael is associated with courage and the spiritual struggle against evil. A novena dedicated to Saint Michael expresses a prayer for God's guidance and strength during times of difficulty.
Which candle is appropriate for praying for someone who is ill? A candle dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, the Divine Mercy or a patron saint can accompany prayers for someone experiencing illness. Such prayers may express hope, compassion and spiritual support, but a candle does not provide medical treatment or guarantee healing.
Can I light a novena candle for a deceased loved one? Yes. Catholics may pray for the deceased during a novena, particularly around All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. A white prayer candle can symbolise hope in the Resurrection and remembrance of a loved one.
What does the colour of a novena candle mean? White is often associated with purity, peace and prayer, while other colours may carry devotional or cultural associations. These meanings are not universal Catholic rules, and the effectiveness of prayer does not depend on candle colour.
Can I use a novena candle to pray for peace in my family? Yes. A candle dedicated to the Holy Family, the Sacred Heart of Jesus or the Virgin Mary can accompany prayers for reconciliation, patience, love and unity within the family.

How to Pray a Novena and Use a Sanctuary Candle Safely
A novena can be prayed at home, in a chapel or with a prayer group. It is a simple spiritual practice that encourages regular prayer and reflection over nine consecutive days.
How do I begin a nine-day novena? Choose a prayer intention and a devotion that is meaningful to you. Set aside a few minutes each day for nine consecutive days to pray, read a passage from Scripture or reflect in silence. A novena candle can serve as a reminder of this commitment.
Do I need a different prayer for each day? Not necessarily. Some novenas contain nine different prayers, while others use the same prayer each day. You can follow a traditional novena or choose suitable prayers according to your devotion.
Can I pray a novena without lighting a candle? Yes. A candle is an optional devotional aid. The heart of a novena is prayer, not the use of a particular object.
Can a sanctuary candle be blessed? A priest or deacon may bless a candle intended for religious devotion. A blessing encourages faith and prayer; it does not give the candle magical properties or guarantee that a particular request will be granted.
Where should I place my novena candle? Place the candle upright on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, paper, decorations, children and pets. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and keep the candle within sight whenever it is burning.
Can I leave a novena candle burning overnight? No. For fire safety, never leave a candle burning while sleeping or when nobody is supervising it. Extinguishing the candle does not interrupt the nine-day prayer commitment.
Can I offer a novena candle as a religious gift? Yes. A sanctuary candle can be a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys prayer or has a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary or a patron saint. It may be offered during religious celebrations or as a gesture of spiritual encouragement.
Why are candles important in Catholic prayer? Candlelight symbolises Christ as the light of the world. Lighting a candle can help create a peaceful atmosphere for reflection, thanksgiving and prayer, while reminding believers of hope and trust in God.
