Every year, on 2 October, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. A special day that invites us to remember this discreet and benevolent presence that God places by our side to accompany us on our journey through life.
We often speak of our ‘guardian angel’, sometimes from our earliest childhood. But who are guardian angels really? What does the Bible tell us about them? What is their role in our spiritual life, and why does the Church dedicate a special feast day to them?
Through this beautiful celebration on 2 October, let us rediscover these messengers of God who watch over us and lead us to Him.
Who are angels in the Christian tradition?
The word ‘angel’ comes from the Greek angelos, which means ‘messenger’.
In the Christian faith, angels are spiritual beings in the service of God. Throughout the Bible, they appear as His messengers, but also as servants of His plan of salvation.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament, their presence accompanies many key moments in sacred history.
An angel comes to Hagar’s aid in the desert. Angels appear in Jacob’s dream. An angel accompanies the people of Israel. The archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to Jesus. Angels announce the birth of the Saviour in Bethlehem to the shepherds. An angel warns Joseph that he must flee to Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus. Later, angels are also present at the Resurrection of Christ.
Angels therefore never take the place of God: they are at His service and carry out His will.
What is a guardian angel?
Among the tasks entrusted to angels, Christian tradition recognises that of protecting, accompanying and guiding humankind.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that, from the beginning of existence until death, human life benefits from the protection and intercession of the angels.
The guardian angel can thus be understood as an invisible companion on our earthly journey.
He does not make decisions for us nor does he take away our freedom. He accompanies us on our journey towards God, encourages us to do good and intercedes for us.
This presence is, above all, a sign of a deeply comforting reality: God does not abandon us.
Even when we feel alone, when we are going through a difficult time, or when we no longer know which direction to take, faith reminds us that the Lord continues to care for us.
The guardian angel thus becomes the unobtrusive sign of this divine care.
Guardian angels in the Bible
Several passages in the Bible have nourished the Christian faith regarding the protection of angels.
In the Book of Exodus, God promises his people a presence to guide them on their journey:
‘Behold, I am sending an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared for you. ”
Exodus 23:20
These words beautifully express the angel’s mission: to guard and guide.
In the Psalms, we also find this magnificent promise:
‘He commands his angels to guard you in all your ways. ”
Psalm 90 (91), 11
This image of an angel sent by God to watch over our steps has endured through the centuries and nourished the prayers of generations of Christians.
Jesus himself speaks of angels when he refers to little children:
‘See that you do not despise any of these little ones, for I tell you, their angels in heaven continually see the face of my Father who is in heaven. ”
Matthew 18:10
This passage is one of the biblical texts most frequently associated with the tradition of guardian angels.
A presence that accompanies us throughout our lives
Our guardian angel is not solely associated with protection against physical dangers.
Their mission is, above all, spiritual.
They accompany us in our relationship with God and encourage us from within to choose what is just, good and true.
In moments of doubt, we can ask them to help us discern.
In moments of temptation, we can ask for their help to remain faithful to what is good.
When we are afraid, we can entrust our worries to them.
When we find it hard to pray, we can ask them to bring our prayer before God.
And when we are going through a trial, we can remind ourselves that we are never entirely alone.
The presence of our guardian angel is silent. It does not seek to impose itself. It always directs us back to the One from whom it comes: God.
Why do we celebrate the Holy Guardian Angels on 2 October?
Devotion to guardian angels has a very long history in Christianity.
Over the centuries, it has developed particularly within monastic spirituality and subsequently in popular piety.
The celebration of the Guardian Angels gradually became distinct from that of the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, who are celebrated today on 29 September.
The feast day dedicated specifically to the Holy Guardian Angels subsequently spread throughout the Church and was fixed for 2 October.
This closeness between the two celebrations is particularly beautiful: a few days after honouring the three great archangels of the Bible, the Church invites us to reflect on these more discreet angels who accompany each of us in our daily lives.
What is the difference between a guardian angel and an archangel?
We are particularly familiar with three archangels named in biblical tradition: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.
Saint Michael is associated with the fight against evil and the defence of God’s people.
Saint Gabriel is the great messenger of the Annunciation: it was he who announced to Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus.
Saint Raphael appears notably in the Book of Tobit, where he accompanies and guides the young Tobit on his journey.
Guardian angels, for their part, are particularly associated with accompanying each person on their journey through life.
All, however, share the same purpose: to serve God and his plan of love.
Can we pray to our guardian angel?
Yes. Christian tradition invites us to ask for the intercession and assistance of our guardian angel.
This does not, of course, mean worshipping them: worship belongs to God alone.
We can, however, address our guardian angel in a simple and trusting prayer, asking them to protect us, enlighten us and help us to follow the path that God desires for us.
This prayer can be said first thing in the morning, before starting the day, or in the evening before going to sleep.
We can also call upon our guardian angel before a journey, an important decision, a trial, or simply when we feel the need for guidance.
Entrusting our children to their guardian angels
The feast day on 2 October is also a wonderful opportunity to entrust children in particular to the protection of their guardian angels.
For generations, parents and grandparents have been teaching the little ones to pray to their angels.
This simple tradition conveys an essential truth of the faith: God cares for each and every one of his children.
We can therefore pray for our children, our grandchildren, our godchildren and all those dear to us.
When we cannot be with them, when we worry about them, or when they begin to forge their own path in life, entrusting their journey to God and to the protection of their guardian angel can become a true act of faith.
How can we mark the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels?
2 October can be an opportunity to take a few extra minutes to pray.
We can begin the day by thanking God for his protection and for all the times his Providence has been with us without us even realising it.
We can also ask our guardian angel to help us be more attentive to the promptings that lead us towards what is good.
It is also an ideal day to teach children a little prayer to their guardian angel or to revive a prayer habit of our own that we may have forgotten since childhood.
Above all, this feast day can invite us to ask ourselves a very simple question:
Do I leave enough room for God to guide me?
For the guardian angel never diverts us towards himself. He leads us towards the Lord.
An invitation to rediscover trust
In our daily lives, we can easily allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by worries.
We want to protect those we love, anticipate difficulties, and control what might happen.
But not everything depends on us.
The feast of the Holy Guardian Angels therefore reminds us of a comforting truth: we can also entrust.
Entrust our children.
Entrust our family.
Entrust a journey.
Entrust a decision.
Entrust our worries.
Entrust what we cannot control.
Not because the difficulties will necessarily disappear, but because faith teaches us that we do not walk the paths of our lives alone.
Prayer to the Holy Guardian Angels
? Let us pray together to our Guardian Angels
Holy Guardian Angel,
faithful companion whom God has placed by my side,
today I entrust to you my life,
my joys, my worries and my hopes.
Watch over my steps
and protect me on the paths I must travel.
When I doubt, enlighten me.
When I am afraid, reassure me.
When I stray from what is right, help me to find my way back.
When trials arise, be with me and strengthen my trust in God.
Watch over my family too,
my children, my loved ones
and all those I hold dear in my heart.
Protect those who are travelling,
those who are suffering,
those who are alone
and those who need a comforting presence today.
Help us to recognise in our lives
God’s loving presence
and lead us ever closer to Him.
Holy Guardian Angels,
watch over us, protect us
and accompany us every day on the path of faith.
Amen. ?
Happy Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels!
On this 2 October, let us remember this invisible presence that accompanies us and give thanks to God for his angels.
May this feast be an opportunity for each of us to renew our trust, to entrust those we love to the Lord, and to walk our path with greater peace.
Holy Guardian Angels, watch over our families and lead us to God. ?
