A triumphant entry into Jerusalem
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. It commemorates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem a few days before his Passion.
Acclaimed by the crowd, he is welcomed like a king. The inhabitants spread their cloaks on the road and wave palm branches, shouting "Hosanna". This moment is recounted in the Gospels and remains deeply symbolic.
Palm branches, a powerful symbol
The palm branches blessed during the celebration represent the recognition of Jesus as the Messiah. Depending on the region, they may be palm, boxwood or olive branches.
After Mass, many people keep them in their homes, near a cross or icon. They become a sign of faith and protection.
The following year, these branches will be burned to become the ashes for Ash Wednesday. The liturgical cycle continues in this way, linking the seasons together.
Joy that heralds suffering
Palm Sunday may seem paradoxical. The celebration begins in joy, but the reading of the Passion immediately plunges us into the suffering of Christ.
The crowd that acclaims Jesus will be the same crowd that, a few days later, will cry out, "Crucify him."
This contrast challenges us. Is our faith stable, or does it depend on circumstances?
Entering Holy Week personally
Palm Sunday is not just a historical memory. It invites us to welcome Christ into our lives.
Welcoming Jesus as king does not mean seeking the spectacular, but giving him first place in our choices, our relationships and our decisions.
This day opens a path. It prepares us to contemplate the Passion, to pass through the silence of Holy Saturday and to celebrate the Resurrection.
An invitation to commitment
Bringing a blessed palm branch home is a visible sign. But the most important thing is our inner commitment.
Palm Sunday asks us a simple question: am I ready to follow Christ not only in joy, but also in trial? This is the beginning of a decisive week.
Prayer for Palm Sunday
Lord Jesus,
on this Palm Sunday,
I welcome you as my King and my Saviour.
Give me a faithful heart,
able to follow you in joy as well as in hardship.
Lead me to the light of Easter.
