Preparing for Easter: experiencing Holy Week in depth

A week at the heart of the Christian faith

After forty days of Lent, Holy Week arrives as a climax. It takes us into the last days of Jesus, into his Passion, death and Resurrection. This week is not just a tradition. It is the very heart of the Christian faith. Each day brings us closer to the mystery of Easter. Each celebration invites us to enter more deeply into the love of Christ. To truly experience Holy Week is to accept to slow down and give time to what is essential.

From Palm Sunday to Maundy Thursday

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. It celebrates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, acclaimed by the crowd. But already, the Passion is foreshadowed.

Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, Jesus' final meal with his disciples. It is the day of the institution of the Eucharist and the washing of feet. A powerful gesture that speaks to us of service and humility.

These first days invite us to contemplate a love that gives itself without reserve.

Good Friday, facing the cross

Good Friday is a day of silence and contemplation. The Church does not celebrate Mass. Christians meditate on the Passion and venerate the cross. It is a demanding time. It confronts us with suffering, injustice and death. But it also reminds us that love goes all the way.

To stand before the cross is to recognise that God never abandons us, even in darkness.

The silence of Holy Saturday and the joy of Easter

Holy Saturday is a day of waiting. A day of silence. It may seem empty, but it prepares us for an immense light. Then comes the Easter Vigil. The night is illuminated. The new fire is lit. The Alleluia resounds once again. The Resurrection does not erase the cross. It transforms it. It opens a path of hope.

How to live this week in a practical way

Living Holy Week in depth can be achieved through simple gestures: attending services if possible, taking time each day for meditation, reading the Passion narratives, limiting distractions.

We can also perform a concrete act of reconciliation or service. The essential thing is to enter inwardly into what we celebrate outwardly. Holy Week is not just a memory. It is an invitation to let Christ transform our lives.

Prayer for Holy Week

Lord Jesus,

accompany me during this Holy Week.

Help me to contemplate your love to the very end.

Grant me the grace to remain faithful at the foot of the cross.

Increase in me the hope of the Resurrection.

May Easter renew my faith.

Amen.
