The mysteries of the rosary and the days associated with them

The rosary is a meditative prayer centred on the life of Jesus Christ, seen through the eyes of the Virgin Mary. It consists of mysteries, which correspond to the major events in the life of Christ. Each series of mysteries is traditionally associated with a day of the week, to help the faithful establish a regular rhythm of prayer.

What is a mystery of the Rosary?

A mystery of the Rosary is an event in the life of Jesus and Mary that is meditated upon while reciting the Rosary. Each mystery is prayed over a decade, that is, one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be.

There are four series of mysteries, each consisting of five mysteries. Together, they allow us to contemplate the entire life of Christ, from the Annunciation to the Resurrection, to the glory of Heaven.

The Joyful Mysteries

The Joyful Mysteries invite us to meditate on the childhood of Jesus and the first events of salvation. They are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays.

They include the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. These mysteries highlight humility, obedience, and the simple joy of welcoming God into daily life.

The Luminous Mysteries

The Luminous Mysteries were added by Saint John Paul II in 2002. They are prayed on Thursdays and highlight the public life of Jesus.

They include the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, the Wedding at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist. These mysteries invite us to follow Christ in his mission and to deepen our faith.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

The Sorrowful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays. They allow us to meditate on Christ's Passion and his love offered to the very end.

They include Jesus' Agony in the Garden of Olives, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, and the Crucifixion. These mysteries are often prayed in times of trial, suffering, or doubt.

The Glorious Mysteries

The Glorious Mysteries are prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays. They turn our gaze towards the Resurrection, the victory of life and Christian hope.

They include the Resurrection of Jesus, the Ascension, Pentecost, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and her Coronation in Heaven. These mysteries remind us that suffering is never the last word and that life triumphs with God.

A free and personal rhythm of prayer

Although certain days are traditionally associated with each series of mysteries, this organisation is not a strict obligation. Everyone is free to pray the mysteries that correspond to their heart, their available time, or the liturgical season. The most important thing is to pray with fidelity and trust, allowing the mysteries of the Rosary to nourish one's faith and relationship with God.
