St Barnabas, a companion of St Paul, was one of the first disciples to devote himself entirely to proclaiming the Gospel. His name means "son of consolation", and he lived up to this title by supporting persecuted believers, encouraging communities and opening the doors of the Church to pagans. A figure of gentleness and missionary courage, he is invoked as a protector of evangelisers and an intercessor in times of discouragement.
Powerful prayer to Saint Barnabas
O glorious Saint Barnabas, son of consolation and faithful disciple of Christ, we come to you today with our prayers and hopes. You who left everything to follow Jesus and proclaim his Gospel, obtain for us the grace of a generous and missionary heart.
Saint Barnabas, you who recognised God's work in Paul and supported him despite the mistrust of others, teach us to welcome our brothers without judgement and to believe in the power of grace that transforms lives. Inspire us with words of encouragement and gestures of consolation for those who doubt, suffer or feel rejected.
An apostle of brotherhood, you who brought the Gospel to Antioch and accompanied Paul on his travels, make our communities united and joyful. Help us to overcome divisions, build bridges of friendship and walk together in fidelity to the Holy Spirit.
Saint Barnabas, you who chose gentleness and patience in difficulties, support us in our trials. When we lack courage, come to our aid. When our hearts close, make them open to love. And when we are tempted by discouragement, remind us that the risen Christ is alive and walking with us.
You who were a martyr for the name of Jesus, obtain for us the strength to remain faithful to the Lord in our daily battles. May our faith not be extinguished by fear or fatigue, but remain ardent and radiant.
O Saint Barnabas, present our prayers before the throne of God. Protect our families, strengthen missionaries, comfort the afflicted and make us ever attentive to the calls of the Holy Spirit. Make us humble but persevering witnesses to the love of Christ.
Saint Barnabas, pray for us and accompany us on the journey of faith and brotherhood.
Amen.
