Saint Simon, nicknamed "the Zealot" or "the Canaanite", was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus. His nickname no doubt recalls his ardour and religious fervour. We know few details of his life, but tradition has it that he courageously proclaimed the Gospel to the ends of the earth and sealed his mission with martyrdom. He is invoked as a model of passionate loyalty to Christ and as an intercessor in the battles of faith.
Powerful prayer to Saint Simon the Zealot
O glorious Saint Simon, apostle of Christ, you who were chosen from among the Twelve to walk at his side, we come to you today with confidence. You who are called "the Zealot", because your heart burned with fervour for God's law, obtain for us an ardent faith and a love without lukewarmness.
Saint Simon, you who left everything to follow Jesus, teach us to put the Lord above all things. Deliver us from useless attachments, distractions and compromises, so that we may walk with firm steps on the path of the Gospel.
A missionary apostle, you who carried the light of Christ to distant lands and faced persecution for the love of your Master, make us courageous in our witness. Inspire truth in our words and charity in our deeds, so that with all our lives we may proclaim the joy of the Gospel.
Saint Simon, zealot of the Kingdom, intercede for Christians tempted by lukewarmness and discouragement. Rekindle in us the fire of prayer, the taste for the Word of God and the passion for service. Teach us not to be afraid to give our lives for Christ, even in the small things of everyday life.
Faithful martyr, you who sealed your witness with your blood, support those who suffer today because of their faith. Protect persecuted Churches, strengthen missionaries and keep alive in us the hope of the victory of the Risen One.
O powerful intercessor, present our prayers before the throne of God. Obtain for us perseverance in trial, joy in the midst of our struggles, and the grace to remain faithful to the end. May our lives be flames that light and warm, to the glory of God and the service of our brothers.
Saint Simon the Zealot, pray for us and make us faithful witnesses of Christ.
