Saint James the Greater, son of Zebedee and brother of Saint John, was one of the apostles closest to Christ. A witness to miracles and the Transfiguration, he was also the first apostle to shed his blood for the Gospel. Since the Middle Ages, his tomb in Compostela has attracted millions of pilgrims who have come to entrust their lives, their labours and their prayers to him. Patron saint of pilgrims and travellers, Saint James is invoked to obtain strength, perseverance and courage on life's journey.

Powerful prayer to Saint James the Greater

O glorious Saint James, apostle of Christ and protector of pilgrims, we come to you today with hearts full of trust. You who left everything to follow Jesus, teach us to walk faithfully along the path of faith.

Saint James, privileged companion of the Lord, you who saw the glory of Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration and shared his agony in Gethsemane, sustain us in moments of wonder as well as in hours of sorrow. Obtain for us the grace to remain close to Jesus, in joy as well as in trial.

A courageous apostle, the first of the Twelve to have given your life by martyrdom, make our hearts firm and ardent in the battles of faith. When we are tempted by fatigue, discouragement or indifference, come to our aid and remind us that the crown of glory is promised to those who persevere to the end.

Patron of pilgrims, you who have inspired the road to Compostela for centuries, accompany our daily journeys. Help those who set out on pilgrimage to find in their walk a path of conversion and peace. Help each of us to understand that our whole life is a pilgrimage to the Father's house. Put in our hearts the desire to walk in truth, to share the bread of friendship and to welcome our brothers with kindness.

Saint James, protector of travellers, extend your blessing on those who take the road, on the sick in search of healing, on the poor in search of dignity and on those who are still seeking God's light. Intercede for our families and for the Church, that they may go forward together, united in love and hope.

O holy apostle, friend of the Lord and brother of John, be for us a sure guide. Lead our steps towards the risen Christ and make our lives a witness of faith and charity. Through your intercession, may our prayers rise like a pleasant perfume before the throne of God, and that at the end of our earthly pilgrimage we may be welcomed into eternal joy.
