St Peter, the first of the apostles, was chosen by Jesus to be the rock on which He would build His Church. A fisherman from Galilee, simple and ardent, he experienced human frailties by denying Christ, but he also bore witness to unshakeable courage after the Resurrection, even to the point of giving his life through martyrdom in Rome. Protector of the Church, he is invoked as a guide in faith, a support in times of doubt and a powerful intercessor with God.
As we pray to Saint Peter, we turn our gaze to the one whom Jesus chose as the foundation of the Church. His fidelity and courage invite us to remain confident in the Lord's love, even at the heart of our weaknesses.
Powerful prayer to Saint Peter
O glorious Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles and unshakeable rock of Christ's Church, you to whom the Lord has entrusted the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, we turn to you with filial trust.
You who left your nets on the shores of the Lake of Galilee to follow Jesus, teach us to leave everything behind to follow the Lord with generosity and fidelity. Obtain for us the grace to recognise his voice in the silence of prayer and to respond without fear, certain that God leads our lives with love.
St Peter, you who knew weakness and bitter tears after your denial, come to the aid of our frailties. Intercede for us when discouragement overwhelms us, when fear paralyses us, when temptation turns us away from the good. By your example, remind us that God's mercy is greater than our faults and that his forgiveness always lifts us up.
You, the Rock chosen by Christ, strengthen our faith in the storms. When the winds of trial blow, when the waves of suffering threaten to engulf us, be our support and our bulwark. Obtain for us the strength to remain faithful to the Gospel even in the face of persecution and misunderstanding.
Pastor of the nascent Church, watch over our Christian communities today. Inspire priests, bishops and the Holy Father with wisdom, fidelity and apostolic zeal. Protect the Church from divisions, keep her united in truth and charity, and make every Christian a missionary of the peace and light of Christ.
O St Peter, witness of the Risen One, you who confessed, "Lord, you know everything, you know well that I love you", make our love for Jesus more ardent and true. Obtain for us the grace to love the Lord with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our strength, and to love our brothers and sisters with patience and generosity.
Saint Peter, martyr of Christ, you who gave your life in faithfulness to the end, accompany us in our spiritual battles and in our daily trials. Make us courageous and confident, so that, like you, we may be able to say at the end of our race: "I have kept the faith."
O powerful intercessor, present our prayers before the throne of God. May our families find in you a protector, may our sick find in you a comforter, may our seekers after truth find in you a guide. And may one day, with you and all the saints, we enter into the eternal joy prepared by the Father.
Saint Peter, pray for us, strengthen our faith, keep us faithful to the Church and lead us to Christ, the Good Shepherd.
